Rules and Regulations for the 12th Macao-wide IT Competition ALICE 3D Programming Contest

OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this Information Technology (IT) competition is to promote the application of IT and cultivate IT talents and interests with an aim to facilitate IT development in Macao.

ELIGIBILITY *

The 12th ALICE competition is open to the following two categories:

  • Secondary School Category: all secondary school students in Macao. Each team (2 to 3 members) in this category may have a secondary teacher as its mentor (optional). A mentor can assist the team with the technical aspects of the competition but the creative aspects should be the work of the students. A mentor can assist no more than 2 teams. Members and mentor of a team must be from the same school.
  • Open Category: all Macao residents over 18 years of age, including foreign students attending universities/higher education institutions in Macao. Each participating team in this category must comprise of between 2 to 3 members.

 

* Macao ID cards, valid Student or Teacher ID cards are required for verification of eligibility.

* Each team member can only participate in one team.

Competition Format

  • Secondary School Category: The participating teams are required to use ALICE 2.x (2.4 or above)1 programming world to create an animation or game related to the theme. The playtime/demo time of the Story or Game should not be less than 1 minute but no more than 3 minutes. Marks will be deducted if the playtime is outside this range. Each team must use the ALICE 2.x programming world to demo their program during the presentation.
  • Open Category: The participating teams are required to use MIT App Inventor 2 2 to write a mobile application related to the theme. Each team must use MIT AI2 Companion or Android emulator to demo their program during the presentation.

Registration

Participating teams are to complete the Entry Form at the competition web site http://ipm.edu.mo/ITC and email to ITC@ipm.edu.mo by 17 January 2020.

 

Late entries will not be entertained. Acknowledgements of receipt will be sent via email.

 

An in-class tutorial for ALICE will be provided for FREE by MPI for all interested participating teams on a date to be announced. Remember to indicate your interest in the Entry Form.

Submission

  • For the Secondary School Category, the following files are required:
    • A single ALICE world file (in .a2w format). Marks will be deducted for submitting more than one .a2w files.
    • A demo video (in .mp4 format)
    • Documentation file (in .docx format)
  • For the Open Categoryy, the following files are required:
    • A single AIA file (exported from MIT App Inventor 2). Marks will be deducted for submitting more than one .aia files.
    • Documentation file (in .docx format)
  • For both the Secondary School and Open Category, the demo video (within 8 min) must include demonstration of the Alice program or the MIT App Inventor program, and the participants must introduce the work.
  • Please make sure that the correct program and the required files are submitted and that a properly working USB drive or CD/DVD is submitted. The documentation file format will be provided by the organizer.
  • Participants must submit the required files in USB drive or CD/DVD to the following address by 6pm, 8 April 2020.

  • One submission is allowed for each team.

Oral Presentation

  • Each team must make an oral presentation (10 minutes) of the program (on a date to be determined) after the submission of the program. The oral presentation should consist of a presentation (explaining the program) and a Q&A session for the judges. Each team must demo their Alice animation / MIT App Inventor program during the presentation.
  • All members of the participating teams must participate in the presentation to address possible questions by the judges. 5% of the total marks will be deducted for any team member’s absence. Teams that are absent from or late for the presentation will receive zero marks for the presentation part.
  • A signed Declaration of Original Work form must be submitted before the oral presentation. The Declaration of Original Work form will be provided by the organizer

Judging Criteria

The judging criteria are as follows:

    • User experience (or Story telling) [30%]
    • Technical complexity [20%].
    • Creativity [15%]
    • Match of the theme [10%]
    • Documentation [10%]
    • Oral presentation [10%]
    • Team work [5%]

A panel of judges consisting of external experts will judge the programs based on the criteria set above.

Contents of Entries

Any entry which has been determined by the organizer or the judges to be obscene, illegal, unreasonably violent or contrary to any laws, regulations or public policies in Macao will be immediately disqualified.

Intellectual Property Rights

  • The ALICE program and MIT App Inventor program submitted must be the participants’ own original work. A Declaration of Original Work form must be submitted before the oral presentation.
  • Each participating team must ensure that their entry does not infringe any copyright or any other intellectual property rights of any other third party in any part of the world.
  • All intellectual property rights relating to any entry submitted shall be deemed to be owned by MPI.
  • MPI shall have the exclusive right to use any or all of the intellectual property rights relating to any entry in whole or in part for non-commercial publicity without giving any of the participants any remuneration or royalties of any form whatsoever.
  • Participants must declare their sources for any imported media (images, sounds and 3D models) not produced and owned by themselves in the submission document (submission.docx).

Other Requirements

  • The organizers reserve the right to disqualify any competitor who does not comply with the Rules and Regulations.
  • The decision of the panel of judges is final. Appeals will not be entertained.
  • Under rare circumstances, the organizers reserve the rights to modify the Rules and Regulations for the competition.
