Visit by the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, UCLA

With the aim of strengthening international academic exchange and opportunities to cooperate with internationally renowned universities, as well as to broaden our students’ opportunities to study and enjoy exchange opportunities overseas, MPI invited Professor Vijay K. Dhir, Dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of California Los Angeles, to visit once again in March 2015.

The intentions behind this visit were for the two institutions to further discuss the possibilities for establishing an exchange of scholars, as well as opportunities for collaboration in various areas of education and research.

Professor Dhir expressed his appreciation that MPI is the first higher education institution in Macao to have undergone a successful institutional review conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, a UK quality assurance agency of international standing, the quality of MPI’s teaching and management thus being internationally recognised.

MPI’s Vice President, Professor Yin Lei, remarked that the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of UCLA had established a mechanism for reciprocal visits and academic exchange with MPI for years, leading to excellent results from cooperative projects in teaching and research. Professor Lei also noted that the joint research centre of the two institutions was built at the headquarters of MPI in 2010 and, through efficient cooperation, had produced fruitful outcomes in research relating to computer networks. The Master of Science in Engineering programme offered by the University of California, Los Angeles, in collaboration with Macao Polytechnic Institute was ranked No.1 among the same kind of programmes in the U.S.A. in 2015.

Professor Dhir was welcomed by ESAP Director Dr. Marcus Im and Head of AAD Dr. Vivian Lei. As well as inspecting the software and hardware of our Computing Programme, Professor Dhir briefed our students about the programmes at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, shared their visions, and generally interacted with the students. The students were greatly interested in UCLA and its programmes and enthusiastic to ask questions. Over the past several years a number of our graduates have pursued further studies at UCLA.

Professor Dhir, distinguished professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering, was named Dean of UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science in March 2003. In 2006, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering – among the highest honours awarded to engineers – for his work in boiling heat transfer and nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics and safety. He received the 2004 Max Jakob Memorial Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). He is also a fellow of the American Nuclear Society and a Fellow and Honorary Member of ASME.

In 2011 MPI’s Computing Programme successfully achieved accreditation granted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Macao Polytechnic Institute’s mission is grounded in the interdependent relationship between teaching and research. Our research and development efforts are primarily focused on: wireless technology, network security, artificial intelligence, multimedia and gaming technology.
