MPI Journal Ranks 6th in the “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals” Rankings

Renmin University of China's (RUC) “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals” Rankings 2014 and the 2014 Research Report on Reprinted Academic Directory for Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals were announced in Beijing on March 31, 2015. About 400 guests attended the news conference including department heads of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China, and experts and scholars from the field of evaluation of achievement in research in humanities and social sciences, as well as representatives from academic journals and academic institutions. The MPI Journal has reached new heights achieving 6th in the rankings of all college journals in China in Reprint Rate and Comprehensive Index, and 8th place in Reprint Count. In addition the MPI Journal achieved 9th place in the“General Ranking of Comprehensive Journals Nationwide” (consisting of journals of national higher education institutions, comprehensive journals jointly published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Federation of Social Sciences, and journals of colleges of cadres of party and government). In addition, the MPI Journal was selected to be a significant source for the“Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals”in future.

The “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals” Reprint Rankings were analysed and announced by the Information Centre for Social Sciences of RUC and the Research Centre of Humanities & Social Sciences Evaluation of RUC. Since their debut in 2001, the Rankings have become highly regarded by scholars and researchers from the field of scholarly journals, teaching and scientific research institutions, humanities and social sciences research, and media organisations such as Guang Ming Daily, China Press and Publishing Journal, and dozens of internet media which have been reporting the Rankings continuously for 15 years. The Reprint Rate, Reprint Count, and Comprehensive Index are deemed to be an important source for evaluation of humanities and social sciences research by academic and periodical publishing circles. In addition to this, many more scientific institutions refer to the Rankings as an important parameter for assessment of theses, authors, periodicals, the standards of institutions and their influence. The Rankings are one of the significant indicators of A Guide to the Core Journals of China of Peking University, A Guide to the Humanities & Social Science Core journals in China of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, “Project of Reputed University Journals” and “Project of Famous Columns” of the Ministry of Education, and the Research Centre for China Science Evaluation of Wuhan University’s rankings for universities and journals.

Since its revision in 2011 the MPI Journal, with strong support from the MPI Board of Management, has endeavoured to introduce and nurture academic talents and become a reputed scholarly journal. It advocates research of originality and creativity, consulting experts and scholars for topic selection, expanding its base by opening up to academia at home and abroad, and launching measures such as bidirectional anonymity in peer review. The MPI Journal is well-received by  academic periodical publishing circles, and also by other sectors of society both at home and overseas, for its academic excellence, distinctive characteristics and professional editorial standards. Notably the Journal won the “Social Sciences Journals of China Universities” award in 2014. The Journal’s established columns including “Monographs”, “On H.K. and Macao”, and “Editor’s View” are popular in academia, with many well-written pieces being quoted or reprinted in full by Xinhua Digest, Chinese Social Science Digest, China University Academic Abstracts, and the “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals” Rankings.

In the 2014 Research Report on Reprinted Academic Directory for Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals, the MPI Journal was the only journal to be analysed in a separate section, where it was stated that “the MPI Journal has had a meteoric rise” and comparing the Journal to a “dark horse” in the league of all college journals in China. Since the MPI Journal became a source of the “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals” in 2011, the Reprint Rate of the Journal ranked 56th and then 13th in both 2012 and 2013 in the rankings for all college journals in China, while reaching 6th in 2014. The Report especially complimented the “Monograph” and  “Written Conservations” sections for their distinctive features, in which “Written Conservations on Chiang Kai-shek and Modern China” and “Written Conservations on Global History” were particularly eye-catching. This reveals that the effectiveness of enhancing the journal’s quality lies in a specialist focus which highlights different issues.

The “Editor’s View” section has been published without fail for 15 issues starting from the 4th issue in 2011 to the 2nd issue in 2015, totalling 67 articles of approximately 800,000 words. It has focused upon several hot topics with insightful views which have influenced Chinese periodical circles and academia. Remarkably, the MPI Journal, with this column, ranks 3rd in the Full-text Reprint Rate of “Journalism and Communication Journals”. In addition, “Editor’s View” has become a top flagship column in the field of domestic journal research.
