IAAF Gold Label Road Race, the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2016, was held on 17th January 2016, the tournament attracting more than 74,000 entrants from around the world. Among the team representing Macao Polytechnic Institute alumnus Wang Kun was 1st runner up in the Half Marathon Challenge Men's Overall and Men's Senior Category while alumnus Iao Kuan Un won 1st runner up in the Men's Master category, their achievements bringing great honour to MPI and Macao.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Marathon and thus the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association had the first official theme song of the race - Life and Marathon sung by Hong Kong singer Eason Chan, with Eason being formally invited to participate in the race. The competition this year was recognized as the“IAAF Gold Label Road Race”, the same recognition conferred for the World Marathon Majors held in Boston and Tokyo. This year there were a total of 74,000 entrants participating in the Marathon, half marathon and 10 km race, and the Marathon and Half Marathon races featured a new route, the extended section running from Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, through Jordan and Yau Ma Te, then all the way to Argyle Street and Lin Cheung Road in Mong Kok before connecting with the West Kowloon Highway.

Over the past few years MPI has sent students and alumni to participate in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon and international tournament, obtaining remarkable results. This year the Standard Chartered Marathon was influenced by cold weather and heavy rain, the race environment being very challenging. With their spirit of perseverance MPI representatives achieved good results. Alumnus Wang Kun won 1st runner up in the Half Marathon Challenge Men's Overall and Men's Senior Category with a time of 1:12:45, while Iao Kuan Un won the 1st runner up in the Men's Master Category with a time of 1:14:54. Ms. Diana Vong, Acting Head of MPI Student Affairs Office, represented MPI and the Alumni Association at the marathon to support our alumni.
