A delegation from Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) visited the Council of the European Commission (EC) in Brussels, Belgium from 30th June to 1st July, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of cooperation between the Institute and the Council of EC. The MPI delegation received a warm welcome from representatives of the EC including Dr. Florika Fink-Hooijer, Director-General of the European Commission's Department for Interpretation; Mr. Filip Majcen, Director in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation; Ms. Anabela Frade, Head of the Portuguese Interpretation Unit; Ms. Etelvina Gaspar, Head of the Translation Office and correspondent of the training programme in Macao; and Ms. Cristina de Preter, Head of the Portuguese Language Department, together with experts from related departments.

The hosts from the European Commission recognised and commended MPI for its contributions in promoting the teaching of Portuguese and in training Portuguese teachers throughout the years. Both parties reviewed the outstanding progress of collaboration, including MPI's conferment of an honorary professorship on Professor José Manuel Durão Barroso, former President of the European Commission; a joint Master's degree in Translation offered by MPI and the EC; MPI's participation in the EC's Erasmus Mundus programme, and the joint efforts of MPI and EC in training over 100 Portuguese teachers and translators from the Chinese Mainland, Macao and neighbouring regions. The host also demonstrated several professional software packages in translation and social media which are currently in use by the Commission. Both parties further explored areas of cooperation and have reached consensus on various issues.

MPI's latest visit to the European Commission yielded a rich harvest and has turned a new page of continued collaboration between the Institution and the Commission, pointing to an unprecedented new era of cooperation between the two parties.
