Collaboration of Macao Polytechnic Institute and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau Strengthened

To continuously enhance the collaboration between Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) on the next generation of Internet Protocol (IPv6), Professor Marcus Im, the Vice President of MPI, Dr. Rita Tse, the Director of the School of Public Administration, and Dr. Chan Tong Lam, the Coordinator of the Computing Programme welcomed Mr. Francisco Leong, the Department Head of the Telecommunications Technologies and Resource Management of CTT, Mr. Billy Ip, the Head of the Division of the Telecommunications Technologies, and Mr. Lei Kuong Leong, the Head of the Division of the Resource Management. They exchanged their opinions in the collaboration of the promotion, research and development of the IPv6 networking protocol in Macao. Despite the fact that IP addresses are running out, the demand of IP addresses continues to increase. IPv6 becomes the solution to resolve this situation as it provides almost unlimited number of IP addresses. Both parties agreed to work together and be well-prepared for the changeover from IPv4 to IPv6.

The IPv6 Network Research Laboratory is a successful collaboration between MPI and CTT since 2013. The aim of the IPv6 laboratory is to disseminate knowledge about IPv6 and support its deployment in Macao. Being the window of IPv6 in Macao, the laboratory is equipped with a IPv6 demonstration network and a IPv6 connection to the global network. Moreover, to let students and visitors experience the benefits and convenience of IPv6, there are a number of IPv6 applications, such as smart home, IPTV, IPCam etc. Over the past 4 years, the Laboratory has successfully organized several IPv6 seminars/workshops, increasing the IPv6 awareness and facilitating the IPv6 take-up. The Laboratory will continuously play a key role in raising awareness and encouraging the deployment of IPv6.

Moreover, the Laboratory complements the MPI Computing Programme in the current teaching and research methods related to the Internet of the future. One of the examples is that it offers advance level networking courses to the 4th Year Computing students, providing them with a platform to gain practical experience.

At the end of the visit, MPI and CTT concluded the meeting. They agreed to organize more IPv6 seminars and workshops and to provide more IPv6 related applications to demonstrate and promote the technology to the Macao community.
