Today (5 January), the Macau Polytechnic Institute (MPI) successfully held the "MPI 2019 Open Day", which served to introduce MPI’s latest developments and achievements to prospective senior high school graduates and the local public. A host of exciting and enriching activities were prepared, including guided campus tours, exhibitions of teaching and research achievements, physical fitness trial tests, sports performances and interactions, workshops on art and design, nursing operations, experiment demonstrations, skill and talent shows, library visits, teaching aid tutorials, and fun prize-winning games. The Open Day attracted over 2,000 senior high school graduates and local residents to participate in these events.

The opening ceremony of the Open Day was held at the MPI Auditorium at 2:30 in the afternoon. Officiating guests attending the ceremony included Professor Im Sio Kei, President of MPI; Hong Bo, Director of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Central Government's Liaison Office; Chang Kun Hong, Deputy Director of Macao's Tertiary Education Services Office; Wong Chong Chon, President of the MPI Student Union; Wong U Kei, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the MPI Alumni Association; as well as principals and representatives from 26 secondary schools in Macao and Hong Kong.

In his speech, Professor Im Sio Kei revealed to the audience that the Ministry of Education of China recently announced that MPI has been awarded the prestigious "National Teaching Achievement Award 2018" established and awarded every four years by the State Council. The MPI program given this award is titled "Towards constructing a new model for international talent training - Internationally Recognized Engineer Education Program: Theory and Practice", which recognizes MPI's long-term commitments to innovation. MPI has thus become the first and the only university in Macao to have won this highly reputable and competitive national award, which represents the highest-level of achievement in the field of education. This award is also a testimony to MPI's high quality of teaching which is well recognized by the whole country and an attestation of our long-term commitment to and remarkable achievement in teaching reform. Professor Im reiterated MPI's adherence to the principle of high quality, student-centered teaching. So far, MPI has trained nearly 20,000 graduates in the diverse fields of Chinese-Portuguese-English translation and interpretation, information technology, gaming management, public administration, business administration, health care, sports, as well as in the cultural and creative industries. MPI students have thus become the only students in Macao to have won the national "2018 China Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest"; the Gold and Silver prizes in the 2017 and 2018 China College Students "Internet Plus" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition organized by the Ministry of Education; and the Gold Prize in the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition. In addition, many students and alumni of MPI have won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in international competitions such as the Asian Games as well as honours awarded by the Macao SAR government. Overall, MPI has obtained remarkable achievements in a wide range of fields.

Professor Im Sio Kei further emphasized that with Macao's Higher Education Regulations taking effect, MPI is poised to launch master's and doctoral programs in key areas to supply the Macao community with more cohorts of top-quality graduates. Through the Open Day, the local community also got to know more about the unique features of MPI's academic programs. MPI cordially encourages senior high school graduates from Macao and beyond as well as other aspiring young people to enroll in our programs.

According to a secondary school graduate who has applied for MPI's Portuguese language program, this program most appeals to her because it has been approved and recognized by Macao government's teacher qualification scheme, which allows her to work as a Portuguese teacher upon graduation.

For the 2019/2020 academic year, MPI is actively recruiting students for its wide range of academic programs: Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation, Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation, International Chinese Language Education, Portuguese Language, Accounting, E-Commerce, Management, Marketing, Gaming and Recreation Management, Computing, Social Work, Public Administration, Sino-Lusophone Trade Relations, Physical Education, Design, Visual Arts, Music, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology and Pharmacy Technology.
