MPI’s MA Students Benefit from Internship & Aid the Growth of Macao “One Platform”
Between May and July 2020, the School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) arranged internship opportunities for more than a dozen students of its Master’s degree programme. Students were trained at the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) (Forum Macao), and at the Rui Cunha Foundation. The training deepened their knowledge of the translation industry, improved their communication skills and enhanced their competitiveness.
The student interns are from the programme of Master of Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting. Peiyu Ma, a translation major, who undertook the internship at the Forum Macao, reflected that the internship had improved her translation skills for different types of official documents, enabled her to transfer the translation theory learnt in class to practical translation work in the office, and also deepened her knowledge of the Portuguese-speaking countries. Interpreting student Wong Weng Ian undertook an internship at the Rui Cunha Foundation. She believes that the internship helped her to apply what she had learnt and to identify her weaknesses so that she could avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

MPI’s MA students in the interpretation room of the Rui Cunha FoundationThe internship units arranged various tasks for MPI students to participate in, including document translation and proofreading, conference video translation and dubbing, conference interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, etc. Furthermore, the students also joined exchange activities, such as meeting representatives of Portuguese-speaking countries, and providing simultaneous interpretation for speakers at the events of the China Culture Week.
Han Lili, Director of ESLT of MPI, stated that internship activities are conducive to the establishment of a mechanism for talent exchange and cooperation, which will help students to enhance their competitiveness and prepare themselves to enter the related industries.
