Invitation to Attend MPI’s Virtual Seminar on Historical Connection between Macao and Coimbra

You are cordially invited to attend the “Online Seminar on Historical Connection between Macao and Coimbra”, to be presented by Professor Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho, Director of the International Portuguese Training Centre for Conference Interpreting of the Macao Polytechnic Institute, on 26th October 2021, to explore the historical connection that binds the two cities in terms of economy, culture and academic exchange, and to analyse the long-term bilateral relationship and development. The seminar is one of the educational activities under the MPI’s General Education Scheme, which aims to strengthen Macao’s talent development, promote multi-disciplinary learning by the students and enhance their knowledge and skills in a comprehensive manner.

With its unique historical background, Macao has always been an important link between China and Portugal, while Coimbra, where the oldest university in Portugal is, provides a significant bridge between the country and the world with its immense appeal for many whose passion is culture and knowledge. The connection between Macao and Coimbra dates back to a long time ago and it is an important chapter for those who try to study and understand their greatly different cultures. During this seminar, you will be presented with a comprehensive review of the origins of the unique link between the two cities, and an insightful account of how this link has never stopped refining itself and developing over the past centuries.

Professor Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho, former Vice Rector of the University of Coimbra from 2011 to 2019 in charge of developing the university’s foreign relations with China, Europe and Portuguese-speaking countries, is highly experienced in international collaboration. During his vice-rectorship, Professor Carvalho contributed to the laying of a solid foundation for substantial Sino-Lusophone exchanges and closer regional ties by assisting the University in establishing within its organisational structure the Academia Sino-Lusófona, the CASS-UC Centre of China Studies, and the Instituto Confúcio (in the field of traditional Chinese medicine).

The “Online Seminar on Historical Connection between Macao and Coimbra” starts at 18:30 (UCT+8) on 26th October 2021. All are welcome to attend this seminar, which will be conducted in Portuguese with simultaneous interpretation in Chinese. Please scan the QR code on the promotional poster to register for free.
