Macao Polytechnic University students making rice dumplings and learning about traditional Chinese culture and customs

In order to carry on Chinese traditions and to increase students’ interest and pride in Chinese culture, the Student Affairs office of MPU held the “Happy Summer Series Activities” – Rice Dumpling Workshop. An experienced chef who is a master of Chinese cuisine taught students to wrap the sticky rice dumplings, allowing the students to have an in-depth understanding of the Chinese culture and the Dragon Boat Festival, and all in a happy atmosphere.

Through the teachings and guidance of the skillful Chinese chef, the students learnt the traditional ways of wrapping the sticky rice dumplings, the process of making them and various other skills, and the students even got to taste their own handmade sticky rice dumplings and so could happily celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival together. The activity attracted international students from different countries such as Brazil, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe. Jociney, a São Tomé and Príncipe student of the Public Administration Programme, felt that the activity was very meaningful as he could personally experience the traditional Chinese way of wrapping sticky rice dumplings which has helped him to broaden his understanding of Chinese culture. The activity also brought students from different nationalities to gather together, to experience the strong atmosphere of the Chinese culture and to have a multicultural exchange between the students.

MPU is always committed to the whole person development of students, and besides the cultivation of academic knowledge and professional skills, it also actively organizes various types of activities for students to develop their mental health and cultural knowledge. The Student Affairs office has launched a series of summer activities through different workshops on various topics, talks and outings, to enrich the learning experience of students and to develop their diverse skills and interests so as to contribute to the cultivation of Macao’s young talents with their love for the motherland and Macao.
