To enhance college students’ awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and deepen their understanding of the “Life on Land”, the Student Affairs Office of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) arranged a wetland tour. Through exploration of wetland ecosystems and immersion in the distinctive beauty of native plants and wildlife, students were inspired to actively engage in terrestrial conservation efforts, supporting global sustainability and harmonious human-nature coexistence.

 

The activity was held at the Hengqin Erjingwan Wetland Park, where students became nature explorers, equipped with binoculars to observe wildlife under the guidance of ecological instructors. Along the journey, they spotted various migratory birds, such as white spoonbills, reef herons and green-winged teal, carefully studying their unique features and behaviors. The instructors also shared insights into wetland ecosystems, including the habitats of different species and the diversity of insects, helping students deepen their understanding of terrestrial conservation. Through this immersive experience, participants gained valuable knowledge to become advocates for global sustainable development.

 

Participating students said that this activity provided a valuable opportunity to step off campus and immerse themselves in nature. Through hands-on fieldwork observing diverse terrestrial species, they realised that their local environment is rich in ecological wonders, while also gaining an unforgettable nature exploration experience. They felt a responsibility to protect the planet, advance sustainable development, and foster lasting harmony between humans and nature. 

 

The Student Affairs Office of MPU stated that the activity integrates scientific education with experiential learning, allowing students to engage directly with real-world environments. By enhancing both educational value and participant enjoyment, the activity deepens students’ comprehension of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The university remains committed to fostering advanced understanding of sustainability issues, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to the harmonious development of human society and nature.
