MPU Vice Rector Shares Insights on Macao Research Development at Times Higher Education Asia Universities Summit
Vivian Lei, Vice-Rector of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), shared insights on elevating Macau's research landscape, along with MPU’s research strategies and success stories, during the Macao presidential spotlight session at the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Universities Summit 2025. About 650 leaders and senior management from higher education institutions worldwide attended to discuss the development of higher education in Asia and foster international exchange and collaboration.
The theme of the THE Asia Universities Summit 2025 is “Asia's rise: A transformative journey in science, technology and innovation”. During the Macao presidential spotlight session, the MPU Vice-Rector shared how MPU emphasises applied research and focuses on the practical application of research findings to foster global sustainability development, smart city construction and academia-industries development. Under the strategy of AI + interdisciplinary research, MPU integrates artificial intelligence across various disciplines, focusing on machine translation, healthcare, drug discovery, and environmental protection. Through research collaboration and real-life applications across different countries, MPU produces tangible outcomes that make a difference in society. By leveraging the historical background of the cultural integration between China and Portugal in Macao, along with MPU's century-long experience in Chinese and Portuguese bilingual research, the university has established collaborative research centres with higher education institutions in China and Portuguese-speaking countries to enhance research capabilities and societal impact.
In the latest THE World University Impact Rankings, MPU is ranked globally 301st - 400th in overall rankings, securing its position as the top-ranked university in Macao. In the scope of “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, MPU is ranked 72nd globally and 23rd in Asia, demonstrating its active engagement in sustainable development.
