MPU Encourages Student Participation in Competitions to Enrich Patriotic Education

Students from Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) participated in the “Constitution and Macao Basic Law” Speech Competition, held in celebration of the 32nd anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR. The event was jointly organised by the Macao Basic Law Promotion Association, the Legal Affairs Bureau, the Education and Youth Development Bureau, and the Municipal Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government. MPU students garnered several awards, including the Championship and the Best Content Award in the Higher Education Institution category— demonstrating not only their professional excellence but also their deep-rooted patriotism and love for Macao.

The top honours in the Higher Education category—Championship and Best Content Award—were claimed by Zeng Shenghong, a student in the Bachelor’s programme in International Chinese Language Education at MPU. His speech, titled “Under the Five-Star Red Flag Waving in the Wind, National Laws Walk with Me,” recounted the story of Macao raising its first national flag. Drawing from his experience as a flag-raiser in MPU’s National Flag Team, he used the symbolism of “19 flag-raisings and 49 seconds of the national anthem” to represent the profound significance of New China’s founding in 1949. Zeng expressed his deep personal connection to the Constitution and the Basic Law, portraying them as the constitutional cornerstones of Macao’s prosperity. His emotionally resonant content and composed stage presence earned unanimous praise from the judges, securing him the dual awards. Wang Man San, a student in the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation at MPU, earned the First-Class Award with her speech titled “Languages in Macao.” She offered a unique and professional perspective on Macao’s multilingual environment, delivering her speech fluently in Portuguese at the beginning and highlighting the city’s multicultural identity under the framework of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

MPU remains committed to fostering students’ national identity and global perspective. Through curriculum design and a wide range of practical activities, MPU guides students toward a deeper understanding of the profound meaning of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. This competition has fully showcased the legal awareness of MPU’s students and their strong sense of responsibility in carrying forward the spirit of patriotism and love for Macao.
