MPU Athletes Strive Hard and Make History by Winning Macao’s First-ever Gold Medal at the National Games

The 15th National Games has been successfully held. As the country’s highest-level and largest national multi-sport event, the 15th National Games featured competition events for 34 sports with 419 sub-events, and mass participation events for 23 sports with 166 sub-events. Over 10,000 elite athletes from across the nation gathered to vie for top honours in different events. Athletes from the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) actively participated in the competition events and mass participation events at the National Games. Among them, Fong Man Hou, a student of the Bachelor of Physical Education, together with his teammates, demonstrated outstanding teamwork and exceptional performance in the Men’s Team Kata event of Karate, winning the first-ever gold medal for Macao SAR at the National Games and marking a historic milestone in Macao’s sports achievements.
In the Men’s Team Kata competition, Fong Man Hou and his teammates delivered consistent and excellent performances, defeating strong opponents through to the final. They then executed the “Annan Kata” with precision, winning the gold medal with a score of 42.7, forging a glorious new chapter in the sports history of Macao. Other MPU athletes also brought honour to Macao. Wong Chak Weng, a student of the Bachelor of Nursing, and U Lok Kei, a student of the Bachelor of Physical Education, won the second prize in the Southern Lion Obstacle event and the third prize in the Dragon Dance Obstacle event respectively with their perseverance, fighting spirit, and teamwork. Macao citizens and MPU were widely honoured and joyful.
The flag bearer of the Macao delegation and Wushu routine athlete, Wong Weng Ian, a student of the Bachelor of Physical Education, remarked that she was joyful and honoured to represent Macao at this prestigious national event and as a flag bearer. She expressed her gratitude to the support of the Macao SAR Government and MPU. Ng Weng Pang, a student of the Master of Science in Sports and Physical Education, competed in the Basketball event; he conveyed his appreciation to the university, coaches and teammates for their support. He shared his joy as a Macao representative in the Basketball event and this precious opportunity to challenge himself against high-level athletes from across the nation, gaining valuable experience and growth in each match, as well as showcasing MPU athletes’ pursuance of excellence.
