From 2021-2022 Semester I, Professor K Louise Barriball, Professor of Nursing Education, Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care at King’s College London, became the external examiner of the programme of Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Professor K Louise Barriball has published extensively, with a key focus being on three interrelated areas: i) the nursing workforce – role development and job satisfaction; ii) the working lives of nurse teachers; iii) the evaluation of nurse education and the student experience.

Professor K Louise Barriball was Vice Dean (Education) between 2015-2022 following several leadership positions at King’s College London, including being appointed Head of Department in 2007 (Primary & Intermediate Care) and then briefly Head of Department for Adult Nursing in 2011 to establish a new department following a restructure of the Faculty.

In 2012 Professor K Louise Barriball was appointed Head of Postgraduate Taught Studies for the Faculty (2012-2014); and Head of Postgraduate Taught Studies for the university in 2014 before taking up the position as Vice Dean (Education).  In this role Professor K Louise Barriball had overall responsibility for the strategic educational priorities for the Faculty aligned to a robust quality assurance agenda to meet the standards and requirements of both governmental and professional policy directives.

Professor K Louise Barriball was the academic lead for Student Attainment at King’s (2018-2021) and led on successful gender equality initiatives for the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care achieving an Athena SWAN Silver Award for this work in 2015. 

Professor K Louise Barriball has extensive experience of quality assurance and external examining. She has been a member of internal review panels for School of Health and Social Science, University of Edinburgh, Scotland; Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Canada; and School of Health Sciences, Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland; and chair of re-validation panel for a joint BSc Nursing programme between Cardiff University and Oman,

Professor K Louise has also been appointed as an External Examiner for many UK and overseas institutions, including: MSc Advanced Practice in Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, BSc Nursing with Registration in Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland, BSc Nursing with Registration in University College Cork in Ireland, the University of Chester in England, BSc Nursing Studies in University of Malta, BSc/DipHE Nursing with Registration in University of Middlesex, England.

As an External Examiner, Professor K Louise Barriball has a major responsibility to ensure that all students are treated fairly. She will be asked to review the examination process, and to comment on its operation. The report of External Examiner is a key source of information in the monitoring of the programme of study.
