Abstract Discrete Mathematics is one of the most difficult courses for undergraduate students in many fields of studies. In day-to-day teaching, mathematics teachers always try to explore different ways to help students overcome mathematics difficulties. This current study is a continuation of a previous study (Yip, Yung, and Pang, 2017), which investigated students’ perceived difficult topics and factors affecting underachievement in introductory level mathematics. The current study focused on evaluating the effectiveness of using video as an instructional medium in Discrete Mathematics learning. A quasi-experimental design was employed. Post-assessment was used to measure achievement, and post-survey was used to determine the effect of videos on attitude. Results showed that video has an almost statistically significant effect on achievement. The post-survey indicated that students felt positively about the use of videos in the classroom. Based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that the use of video in teaching first-year undergraduate students is more effective than using traditional instructional approach in teaching Discrete Mathematics. |
