DEVELOPING SOFT SKILLS IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION – SHARING EXPERIENCE IN A COMPUTING UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE |

Abstract Recent trend of digitization of the society has promoted widespread adoption of big data technologies and data-driven decision making in corporations and governments. This requires the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) workforce to work in interdisciplinary teams, communicate effectively both technical and business ideas, and learn proactively in a rapidly changing technological world. The Computing programme has recognized this need, and strived to develop the soft skills of our students in recent years through a wide range of both in-class and extra-curriculum activities. In this paper, we share our experience and evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. This study assessed the engagement levels of a cohort of Computing students who were tracked during their first and fourth years. Numerical data from the survey were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that the cohort’s engagement score had significantly increased in the area Active and Collaborative Learning and Student-Faculty Interaction in the four years of study. |
