Abstract The goal of social work education was to help the students who have the ability and willingness to engage in social work practice become social workers. However, the social work graduates in China often change their careers immediately after graduation, resulting in the brain drain of the social work profession. One of the most important reasons was that students could not complete the transformation from theoretical learning to practical application. Given the author's two years' experiences at Columbia University in US, this research took the Master of Social Work (MSW) programs of Columbia University as an example and adopted case study method to analyze how professional knowledge, practice, and identity were developed in the process. At the same time, based on the theory of assessment of students’ learning outcomes (SLOs), this research also emphasized the assessment from the procedural and summative perspectives. The purpose of this study was to analyze the objectives, methodologies, outcomes, and characteristics of the development of practical ability in MSW programs, and to provide a reference for the quality assurance of the social work education in China. |
