Macao Polytechnic Institute’s Recent Appointments of Scholars as Leaders of Academic Units

Recent days have witnessed the appointments of several scholars by the Macao Polytechnic Institute as leaders for its academic units. These appointments are lending strong evidence to MPI's long-term commitments towards its guiding principle of 'operating the institute by scholars'.
Among these, Dr. Tse Tan Sim was recently appointed as Director for the School of Public Administration. Dr. Tse had obtained a Bachelor degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), a Master from Universidade Aberta Internacional Da Ásia (Macau),and earned her Ph.D. from Hull University from the U.K. Currently, she is also a visiting scholar at the UCLA School of Henry Samueli Engineering and Applied Science, and a research fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in the UK, with previous service as a deputy executive committee member of the Macao Innovation and Invention Association (MIIA). Dr. Tse has been teaching at MPI since 1990, serving as program coordinator of the Bachelor of Science in computing between 2005 and 2016, and has spearheaded many joint partnership programs in teaching and research between MPI and other world-leading universities such as UCLA. Under her leadership, MPI's BSc in computing program successfully achieved the higher education academic accreditation granted by the IET from the UK in 2011, which has become an applauding success case for other local higher educational institutes to follow similar procedures. Dr. Tse has also conducted rigorous research projects in such areas as urban environment sensing and monitoring systems, social communication network analysis, as well as casino gaming systems and has published widely in international journals and conferences. Her research endeavors and achievements have thus helped pave an internationally solid platform for MPI students and fellow teachers to conduct research, academic exchanges and further studies.

Since the handover of the Macau SAR, MPI has steadfastly upheld its guiding principle of 'Student-Centered and Scholar-Operated', firmly sticking to this principle as the standard of quality assurance for its curriculum design and pedagogical innovation. Given this, it should come as no surprise for MPI to become the very first tertiary educational institute in Asia to be fully accredited by an international academic accreditation authority, i.e., the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education in the UK.
