MPI celebrated International Translation Day to foster the spirit of professionalism among translators and interpreters
The School of Languages and Translation, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), celebrated International Translation Day 2020 to inculcate the spirt of professional best practices and excellence among translators and interpreters. The School of Languages and Translation, as a school of higher education training translators and interpreters, celebrates the event every year. This year, the School celebrated the event both online and offline observing the social distancing protocol, while adapting to the circumstances with technology to embody the key role of a communicator, a mediator, as well as an intermediary.
Since the designation of 30 September of each year as International Translation Day by a UN Resolution in 2017, the International Federation of Translators has celebrated this occasion in different ways. This year, to celebrate the event and the significant role of translators and interpreters in connecting nations, fostering peace and mutual understanding, students of the School brought to the audience various performances; students recited a short prose written on the theme of the event this year, “Finding the words for a world in crisis”, in Putonghua, English and Portuguese; the celebration also featured a short film based on a play written by a student from the English-Chinese Translation and Interpretation Program along with a fest of songs and live music performed by the students and professors. Students from the International Chinese Education Program also showed their journalistic talent and a solid command of the language in an interview produced entirely by the students themselves. It was uplifting to see so many enthusiastic performers and audience members.
