Quality Assurance in the Changing World of Higher Education -
A Perspective From Europe
Abstract
In his contribution, Douglas will explain the role of ENQA in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the work it is doing to support its Member and Affiliate Member agencies. ENQA: supports a diverse range of agencies operating at various levels and with different responsibilities in their development; is actively involved in policy discussions in Europe and beyond; and undertakes 5-yearly reviews of Members so they can demonstrate their compliance with the European Standards and Guidelines which are the cornerstone of quality assurance in the EHEA.
ENQA recently held its General Assembly in Stockholm, Sweden with 46 countries present along with representatives of QA networks in Africa and ASEAN as well as Australia. Douglas will reflect on some of the hot topics discussed there including digitalisation, micro-credentials, European Union policy, Academic Integrity, cross border higher education, sustainability, global policy dialogues and the evolution of quality assurance.
Biography
Douglas is the elected President of President of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA).
He is the former Chief Executive of the UK’s independent Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Douglas held Executive roles there for 20 years and now acts as an international consultant for QAA. He also provides independent consultancy related to higher education and regulation for other clients. He is well known to many APQN members through previous addresses at our meetings, through QAA’s MOU partnerships, QAA international accreditation and participation in international conferences.
He holds non-executive director roles in education and regulation, including being a member of the Boards of the University of Law, the British University in Egypt, Qualifications Wales, Cilex Legal Regulation, South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, Stroud and Cotswold Alternative Provision School and Waldorf Learning
Foundation.
