                 COMP8121      Research Methodology and Ethics   3     45 hrs    ---
                               This module introduces the systematic investigation that attempts to establish facts on

                               a scientific basis. The investigation involves discovery, interpretation, development, and
                               execution of methods that are generic in nature, yet highly applicable to research in
                               information  technology  and  computer  applied  technology.  Topics  covered  include
                               review of a published article, literature review, identifying a research problem, reliability,
                               validity, data collection, simulation, optimization, graphical modelling, research ethics,
                               and research methods specific to computer applied technology. In particular, practical
                               research  methodology,  documentation,  and  transferrable  skill,  especially  for  the
                               computer applied technology, will be investigated. Furthermore, it is also important to
                               formulate ways to write research proposals and academic papers.
                 COMP8122      Selected  Topics  in  Big  Data  and  3   45 hrs   ---
                               Smart Society

                               In this module, students will undertake in-depth explorations of selected topics about
                               the  interrelation  between  Big  Data  and  other  information-related  phenomena  in  a
                               society driven by smart applications. Upon completing the module, students will be able
                               to  identify  and  access  the  interdisciplinary  issues  in  various  socio-technical
                               environments with respect to smart applications, to adopt intelligent Big Data analytical
                               tools and techniques to deal with these issues, and to situate studies of technological
                               innovation in a broad social and Region-specific context.

                               Applied Technology

                               This module is designed to provide students with an introduction to modern computer
                               programming trends, and an in-depth exploration of a specific area within the field of
                               machine learning and data analysis. This module caters to students who have already
                               acquired  a  solid  foundation  in  computer  programming,  machine  learning  and  data
                               analysis  and  are  eager  to  delve  into  advanced  concepts  and  emerging  trends  in  a
                               specialized topic area. By engaging in this module, students will have the opportunity to
                               deepen  their  knowledge,  develop  practical  skills,  and  engage  in  critical  analysis  of
                               cutting-edge topics.
                 COMP8124      Research Topics                ---      ---       ---
                               This  module  is  to  build  up  the  essentials  and  foundations  specifically  for  the  PhD
                               research topics.  According to the personal study plan set  for the PhD research,  the
                               student  must  conduct  relevant  academic  studies  and  activities  in  the  fields  of
                               information and communication technology and engineering, fulfilling the requirements
                               of Macao Polytechnic University and Alma Mater Studiorum — Università di Bologna.
