Macao Polytechnic University has been officially approved as a host institution for National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects in the Hong Kong and Macao region, according to the NSFC’s 2025 registration results. The recognition marks a major milestone in the University’s research development and reflects its growing capacity in disciplinary planning, research infrastructure, and support for fundamental research. The approval is the outcome of sustained efforts to strengthen academic planning and research governance, positioning MPU for deeper engagement in national-level basic research initiatives.
Alignment with the National Research System
Host institution status formally integrates MPU into China’s national framework for fundamental research management. In line with NSFC regulations, approved institutions are responsible for coordinating project applications, overseeing research implementation, and ensuring the compliant and effective use of research funding.
The designation carries strategic significance for MPU’s long-term development across disciplinary enhancement, talent development, scientific research, and community engagement. It also brings the University’s research management practices into closer alignment with national standards, creating a stable and well-regulated platform to support the undertaking of major basic research projects.
The selection process was highly competitive. Of the 1,506 institutions nationwide that applied for host status, only 218 were approved. MPU’s inclusion highlights its demonstrated strength in research quality assurance, resource management, and institutional governance, and represents national-level recognition of its advancing academic profile.
