Sustainability Engagement

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) aims to serve as a significant driving force for promoting sustainable development and achieving the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are pleased to present this report as a comprehensive overview of MPU’s sustainability efforts and performance in the 2022/2023 academic year.

Overview

In this report, we share our progress and achievements towards our sustainability goals, as well as provide detailed information on our sustainability initiatives, including our research, education, collaborations, stewardships, outreach and community engagement efforts.

In 2022/2023, MPU has been at the forefront of leveraging AI across various disciplines to drive positive change in alignment with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). MPU has utilized AI technologies to enhance medical image diagnostics, facilitate drug discovery, and advance medical research (SDG 3). We also harnessed AI-powered innovations to optimize the performance of electric vehicle batteries, thereby contributing to the mitigation of environmental impacts (SDG 9). Additionally, MPU's collaboration with the University of Coimbra led to the establishment of a Joint Research Laboratory in Advanced Technologies in Smart Cities, focusing on optimizing urban infrastructure and promoting sustainable urban development (SDG 11). These initiatives not only advanced technological solutions but also nurtured students’ problem-solving skills and mindsets in addressing environmental issues (SDG 4).

We understand that education and partnerships are essential points that help us move forwards on sustainability goals. In 2022/2023, “Sustainable Development” has been delivered as a common module in our undergraduate curriculum as a systematic means to promote the awareness of sustainable development amongst the youth (SDG 4). We continued to be an institutional member of the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) of the United Nations, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN) and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies of Higher Education (INQAAHE) (SDG 17).

We recognize the importance of our role in promoting environmental, social and economic sustainability. We hope that this report will provide valuable insights into our sustainability strategy and performance, and we welcome any feedback or suggestions for improvement. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable future.
