2nd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ONEncounter with the human sciences
&
4th LinCog - International Symposium on Language and Cognition
2021/11/29 - 2021/12/01
Macao Polytechnic Institute, Macao, China
To promote interdisciplinarity in the research on “Cognition and Language” and related studies, constructing a platform for exchange and cooperation on the human sciences in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, promoting interactions between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and the world, the School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the University of São Paulo (USP), in partnership with the following institutions: Federal Fluminense University (UFF), Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) and Federal Institute of São Paulo (IFSP) jointly organize the online academic event the 2nd International Conference on Encounter with the Human Sciences & The 4th LinCog – International Symposium on Language and Cognition. This online academic event will take place from November 29th to December 1st, 2021. The general theme is “Cognition, language, culture and translation: a borderless and interdisciplinary dialogue”.
The event will feature the participation of several distinguished academics as keynote speakers from China and abroad, who are widely recognized in the field of language and cognition research. It will also promote several thematic symposia, through the presentation of communications, and mini-courses, and other forms of dialogues, participants can share their research and contribute to the scientific advancement in the field of language and cognition.
In order to facilitate communication, simultaneous interpretation in Chinese (from English and Portuguese) will be supported by students from ESLT's bachelor, masters and doctoral programs.
We are now cordially inviting post-graduate students, experts, researchers and all those with an interest in the conference theme to meet with us in a fully online international event.
The 1st International Conference on Encounter with the Human Sciences, was organized by the Coordination of the ESLT Portuguese PhD Program, and it was successfully held on November 25th, 2020. This year it will be its second edition.
LinCog – International Symposium on Language and Cognition – was initially advocated by the founder of the Language and Cognition Research Group of the School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences (FFLCH) of the University of São Paulo (USP), Professor Maria Célia Lima-Hernandes, a renowned Brazilian researcher in cognitive linguistics. It is an event that has had, since the beginning, great success and reaped fruitful results in terms of the interdisciplinary promotion of research on language and cognition. Its three previous editions, held respectively at USP (10-14/11/2014); the UFF and the USP (21, 23-25/11/2016); the University of Los Lagos (Chile) and the USP (21-22/11/2017).
This year's joint event will certainly provide many interdisciplinary opportunities for borderless dialogue about cognition, language, culture and translation.

General theme: Cognition, language, culture and translation: a borderless and interdisciplinary dialogue
Cognition, Language Acquisition and Language Teaching
Coordinators: Prof. Wen Zhisheng, Edward (Macao Polytechnic Institute); Prof. Cristina Lopomo Defendi, (Federal Institute of São Paulo)
This symposium will accept papers that address theoretical and methodological issues in language acquisition and language teaching, both as a mother tongue (first language) and a foreign language (additional language), as well as papers discussing teaching methodologies and strategies with an interactionist nature through discourse genres. We look forward to receiving proposals that focus on the underlying cognitive processes as well as their effects on language acquisition and teaching.
Cognition, Cultures and Literatures
Coordinators: Prof. Dr. Lola Geraldes Xavier (Macao Polytechnic Institute); Prof. Dr. Renata Barbosa Vicente (Federal Rural University of Pernambuco)
This symposium aims to bring together research that uses the various theoretical approaches to the study of cognition in interface with language, culture(s), linguistic, literary or artistic studies. It relies on human cognition and its ability to use linguistic symbols in discursive interactions. It is hoped that this symposium will encourage the discussion of theoretical cognitive issues, from interdisciplinary, cultural, intercultural and literary perspectives.
Cognition and Translation
Coordinators: Prof. Dr. Alexandra Assis Rosa (University of Lisbon); Prof. Dr. Sérgio Duarte Julião da Silva (University of São Paulo)
This symposium aims to bring together research on the translation practices in interface with cognition. It is an incontrovertible fact that translation is a practice that is not limited to the simple transposition of structures from one language to another. Translators must recognize that every text is, in fact, a discursive act and, as such, presupposes subjects, historical realities, cultural variables and worldviews. The subjects of the text to be translated do not carry out their discursive acts as universal entities: they do it according to experiences acquired in their daily lives, normalized in their environment and responsible for the orchestration of their perceptions of the world. Translation must, therefore, contemplate the multiplicity of these perceptions of the world as a result of the cognitive complexity of the elements of the source text. We look forward to receiving papers that focus on the study of cognition as fundamental to the treatment and transposition of the meanings from the source text to the translated text.
Cognition and Interpretation
Coordinators: Profa. Dra. Maria da Graça Gomes Fernandes (Macao Polytechnic Institute); Prof. Dr. Han Lili (Macao Polytechnic Institute)
Interpreting (be it consecutive or simultaneous) is arguably one of the most complex language tasks that demands the interplay of multiple internal and external factors. This symposium welcomes abstracts/papers to address either theoretical or practical issues in the research or teaching of interpreting. We particularly welcome abstracts that explores the cognitive or affective approaches to interpreting, such as the roles of anxiety, working memory, chunking, long-term memory, vocabulary, language proficiency in modulating interpreting performance. Abstracts/Papers discussing other practical issues such as interpreting training or note-taking strategies etc. are also welcome.
Cognition and Computer Aided Translation and Machine Translation
Coordinators: Prof. Dr. Lily Lim (Macao Polytechnic Institute); Prof. Dr. Igor Antônio Lourenço da Silva (Federal University of Uberlândia)
This symposium will bring together works focused on the impact that translation technologies have on cognition, considering, among other issues, how human beings (i) produce or comprehend texts in bilingual or multilingual contexts, (ii) interact with technological artifacts for the production of translated texts and/or (iii) relate with other stakeholders (e.g., translators, project managers, clients) for the execution of translation tasks. We are calling for papers that address cognition from a theoretical or an empirical perspective based on texts and/or tasks performed in the laboratory, in the workplace or in teaching and learning contexts. We also welcome contributions that deal with ethical and professional issues, as well as any other issues that touch on the conference theme.
Cognition, Pragmatics and Superdiversity
Coordinators: Prof. Dr. Maria Luisa Ortiz Alvarez (University of Brasília); Prof. Dr. Wang Yuying, Maggie (Macao Polytechnic Institute); Prof. Zhang Xiang, Rodrigo (Macao Polytechnic Institute)
This symposium intends to receive interdisciplinary papers that take as their goal the interaction between cognition and pragmatics in its broadest sense, and the intention of conducting such research within the theoretical framework represented by the criteria of superdiversity. Other papers on topics, such as heritage languages, host languages, root languages and neural impacts on language processing, within the framework of superdiversity are also welcome.
Cognition, Grammar and Discourse
Coordinators: Prof. Dr. Nilza Barroso Dias (Fluminense Federal University); Prof. Dr. Jussara Abraçado (Fluminense Federal University); Prof. Dr. Isabel Maria do Poço Lopes (Macao Polytechnic Institute)
Considering that the individual necessarily imprints his/her sociocultural identity to speech, in time and space, and that the conditions of interaction and discursive needs, mediated by cognition, influence the grammar of a language, we welcome research developed under the nature of Cognitive Linguistics and other fields that establish an interface between Cognition, Grammar and Discourse.
