STUDY PLAN & MODULE DESCRIPTIONS
Code Module Credits Duration Prerequisite(s)
Table I: Compulsory Modules
PALS8121 Research Methodology 3 45 hrs ---
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to research design, methods, and
analysis in research on language sciences. Students will explore both qualitative and
quantitative research approaches, including experimental design, survey research, case
studies, and ethnography, while gaining practical skills in data collection, coding, and
statistical analysis. Special emphasis is placed on ethical considerations and the critical
evaluation of research literature in language sciences. By the end of the module,
students will be equipped to design and execute rigorous research projects, interpret
findings effectively, and contribute to evidence-based practices in language sciences.
PALS8122 Frontiers in Language Studies 3 45 hrs ---
This module delves into cutting-edge research and emerging trends in language studies,
with a focus on interdisciplinary connections between linguistics, education, and
psychological sciences. Topics include neurolinguistics, language acquisition,
multilingualism, sociolinguistics, and the role of language in cognition and identity.
Students will critically engage with current debates and explore how advances in
sciences are reshaping our understanding of language and its role in society. The module
encourages students to reflect on the implications of these developments for teaching,
learning, and research in language studies.
PALS8123 Digital Applied Linguistics 3 45 hrs ---
This module examines the intersection of linguistics and digital technology, exploring
how digital tools and platforms are transforming language use, learning, and research.
Topics include computer-assisted language learning (CALL), natural language processing
(NLP), corpus linguistics, and the role of generative AI in language education. Students
will analyze real-world applications of digital linguistics, such as automated feedback
systems, online language learning platforms, and linguistic data analysis tools. The
module equips students with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate and apply
digital innovations in linguistics to educational and professional contexts.

PALS8299 Thesis 21 --- ---
The thesis is designed to allow students to make a significant contribution to the
expansion of knowledge in the field of language sciences, addressing research questions
in diverse learning contexts, and to produce research results of scholarly and publication
value. The thesis must be original and the student’s own. It demonstrates that the
student has conducted a thorough investigation of the field and critically articulated
relevant work, clearly demonstrating a mastery of the body of knowledge in the field
and strong analytical skills. It is the student’s responsibility, with the assistance of the
tutor, to ensure that the dissertation is presented in a clear, understandable, and
consistent format. Good project management practice and effective writing skills are
essential to a successful dissertation.
