                            To prepare students for a career in routine diagnostic microbiology laboratory in clinical

                            practice.  Specimen  processing,  isolation  and  identification  of  key  microbial  agent  of
                            infectious diseases, as well as interpretation of results are to be emphasized. Contents:
                            Clinical specimen processing, isolation and identification of pathogenic microbes, genetic
                            tools  in  identification,  pathogenic  waste  disposal,  microbiology  laboratory  safety,
                            laboratory result interpretation.

                            To equip students with the principles and applications of different kinds of microscopes
                            and microscopic examinations, and to understand the clinical significances of microscopic
                            findings  in  clinical  specimen  examinations.  Contents:  Understanding  the  physiological
                            meanings and clinical significances of various bodily fluids diagnostic, including: urine,
                            stool, sputum, synovial fluid, serious fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, semen and amniotic fluid.

                            To  equip  students  with  the  knowledge  in  the  disorders  of  the  cellular  and  coagulable
                            components of the blood, including anemia, leukemias, and other disorders of the bone
                            marrow,  and  disorders  of  the  blood  coagulation  and  hemostasis.  Contents:  Normal
                            hemopoiesis; Development and maturation of blood cells and hemoglobin, anemia and
                            polycythemia,  leukemias,  hemostasis  and  thrombosis;  Basic  hematological  techniques
                            and reference ranges.

                            To  prepare  students  for  routine  diagnostic  parasitology  laboratory  in  clinical  practice.
                            Specimen processing, parasite identification, as well as interpretation of results are to be
                            emphasized.  Contents:  Host-parasite  relationship,  epidemiology  of  common  parasitic
                            infections,  life  cycle  and  pathogenesis  of  common  parasite  disease,  clinical  specimen
                            processing, diagnostic techniques, laboratory safety and result interpretation.

                            To  prepare  students  for  a  career  in  routine  diagnostic  virology  laboratory  in  clinical

                            practice. Specimen processing, identification, as well as interpretation of results are to be
                            emphasized.  Contents:  Common  biological  characteristics,  pathopoiesis  and  clinical
                            features of different viruses, specimen processing and transportation, virus isolation and
                            identification, interpretation of results, pathogenic waste disposal, laboratory safety.

                            This course is intended to train students in Chinese reading comprehension and literary
                            appreciation,  and  acquaint  them  with  basic  knowledge  and  techniques  of  Chinese
                            practical  writing.  Through  the  development  of  techniques  of  reading,  analyzing  and
                            appreciating Chinese works, students are expected to cultivate aesthetic taste, cultural
                            awareness and humanistic values, as well as the ability to collect material, shape ideas,
                            and think logically in the process of reading and writing.
                CHIN2122    College Chinese II                2       30 hrs    ---
                            This  course  is  a  continuation  of  "College  Chinese  I"  with  emphasis  on  enhancing
                            students’  knowledge  and  techniques  of  practical  writing  in  Chinese,  as  well  as  their
                            writing ability in general.
