To equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills for pharmacy practice
in both community and hospital settings. Contents: Roles and functions of community
pharmacies and hospital pharmacies; knowledge and skills for community and hospital
pharmacy practices; drug information services, etc.
BSPT2101 Pharmaceutics 4 60 hrs ---
To equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to formulate
drugs into appropriate dosage forms to achieve optimal therapeutic effects, as well as an
understanding of different dosage forms and their corresponding manufacturing
technologies. Contents: Formulation and manufacturing processes of different dosage
forms, including solutions, emulsions, suspensions, powders, granules, capsules, tablets,
controlled-release preparations, creams, ointments, suppositories, inhalation and nasal
preparations, and nano-pharmaceuticals; packaging; quality control, quality assurance and
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), etc.
BSPY2101 Pharmacology I 6 90 hrs BSPP1102
To equip students with comprehensive pharmacological knowledge, including the
biological effects, mechanisms of action, clinical applications, adverse reactions and
contraindications of various classes of drugs. Contents: Principles related to pharmacology,
pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics; absorption, distribution, metabolism and
excretion; drug potency, adverse reactions and therapeutic index; drug classifications;
drugs acting on neurotransmission; drugs acting on cholinergic system; drugs acting on
adrenergic system; cardiovascular drugs; anti-Parkinson drugs; anti-Alzheimer drugs;
anxiolytics and hypnotics; antidepressants; psychotropics; anti-epileptic drugs; drugs used
in general and local anaesthesia; and opioids, etc.
BSPY2102 Pharmacology II 6 90 hrs BSPP1102
To equip students with comprehensive pharmacological knowledge, including the
biological effects, mechanisms of action, clinical applications, adverse reactions and
contraindications of various classes of drugs. Contents: Drugs acting on endocrine system;
various types of antimicrobial drugs; anticancer drugs; immunosuppressants and
immunomodulatory agents; drugs acting on hematological, respiratory, and digestive
systems; anti-inflammatory agents; drugs for dermatologic disorders; clinical toxicology;
drugs of abuse; and pharmacogenomics, etc.
BSDC2102 Dermopharmacy and Cosmetic 2 30 hrs ---
Science
To equip students with fundamental knowledge of dermopharmacy, cosmetic science and
related technologies. Contents: Theories and practices in beauty science; formulation
science of different cosmetic preparations; methods of cosmetic ingredient delivery;
perspectives on safety, regulatory control and environmental issues related to cosmetics,
etc..
