“ONE COUNTRY TWO SYSTEMS” STUDY BASE LAUNCHED

Since 1999, Macao has been witnessing steady development in various socio-economic aspects and different walks of life, thanks to the successful implementation of the “One Country Two Systems” policy. The “One Country Two Systems” Study Base newly established at Macao Polytechnic University will further bolster national education in the Macao SAR. By integrating elements of tourism and leisure, it will enrich the synergetic relation between education and tourism, creating conducive conditions for the moderate diversification of Macao’s economy.

“ONE COUNTRY TWO SYSTEMS” STUDY BASE GRANDLY UNVEILED

The grand inauguration ceremony of the MPU “One Country Two Systems” Study Base was officiated by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR government (MSAR), Ao Ieong U; Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the MSAR, Yan Zhichan; Vice President of the Legislative Assembly of MSAR and the President of the MPU Council, Chui Sai Cheong; Director of the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the MSAR, Li Xuefei; Rector of MPU, Im Sio Kei; Deputy Director of Education and Youth Development Bureau of MSAR, Teng Sio Hong; Vice President of the Chinese Educators Association of Macao, Ao U Hong; and Vice Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Macao Catholic Schools Association, Leong Su Weng; along with 100 other guests and participants from 20 Chinese mainland universities and various sectors of the community.

Rector Im Sio Kei stated that, in order to cooperate with the policy implementation of the Macao SAR government, MPU launched the “One Country Two Systems” Study Base in the theme of national education to cultivate patriotism in youth on all fronts. At the same time, the two-way exchange of Macao students to the mainland and mainland students to Macao will become a new trend for inheriting the spirit of “loving the motherland and loving Macao”. MPU will strive to build this series of activities into a nation-wide academic brand. The “One Country Two Systems” Study Base will launch study programmes targeting young students and disseminate the experience of the successful implementation of the “One Country Two Systems” policy in Macao through activities such as seminars, workshops, field visits and inspections. Through these events, the Study Base aims to give young students across the nation a deeper understanding of the close relationship between Macao and the motherland, and the significance of “One Country Two Systems” as a way to deepen their sense of national pride, patriotism and sense of responsibility in building a strong country, thus contributing to the long-term prosperity and stability of the country.

THE FIRST “ONE COUNTRY TWO SYSTEMS” STUDY CAMP

At the inauguration ceremony, the closing ceremony of the 2023 “One Country Two Systems” study camp was concurrently held, and certificates were presented to the participating teachers and students by the officiating guests. The establishment of the “One Country Two Systems” Study Base marked the inaugural event of the “One Country Two Systems” study camp this summer. As an activity promoting patriotism and love for Macao, it drew a significant number of teachers and students from higher education institutions in the mainland. Participants in the study camp hailed from 20 universities including Beihang University, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Chengdu University, Hubei University and Tianjin University of Technology.

The study camp offers students a fresh viewpoint on Macao's development. Through specialised academic lectures and field study, it allows students to holistically appreciate the significance of the “One country Two systems” policy across various social dimensions. Both teacher and student participants appreciated the activities of the study camp as it allowed them to witness the prosperity and development of Macao, as well as the distinctive allure of the city, where Chinese and western cultures intersect. Macao’s world cultural heritage sites is a featured example.

Highlights of the “One Country Two Systems” study camp videos

The “One Country Two Systems” study camp this year offers a rich array of activities, including a series of themed academic lectures, field research, site visits, student interactions, and experiences of Chinese and Portuguese cultures. The themed academic lectures, starting from Macao’s social development, economic system, Basic Law, association development, and youth development, provide a multi-faceted analysis of Macao’s social and economic development strategies and positioning. They employ numerous examples to delve into the success of the “One Country Two Systems” practice. In addition to the academic lectures, the study camp visits various related exhibitions and renowned world cultural heritage sites in Macao. These include the Golden Lotus Square, the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao, the Commemorative Gallery of the Macao Basic Law, and the Educational Patriotic Base for Youth. These visits aim to deepen young students’ understanding of Macao's socio-economic development, history, and culture from a global perspective.
