MPU JUMPS UP TO 100 IN THE TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION WORLD UNIVERSITY IMPACT RANKINGS

In 2023, Macao Polytechnic University made remarkable strides in the Times Higher Education World University Impact Ranking, landing between 101 – 200th globally for the sustainable development goals of decent work and economic growth, and sustainable cities and communities. This ranking involved 1,591 universities from 112 countries worldwide.

Promoting sustainable development is one of the core strategic goals of MPU, with teaching and research in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine translation, Portuguese education, environmental protection and intangible cultural heritage, which could steer sustainability. This ranking not only reaffirms MPU’s commitment to sustainable development but also validates its relentless efforts in relevant teaching and research.

INNOVATE TO PRESERVE OUR CULTURE

Macao has a long history of cultural exchange between the East and the West. The city is filled with a unique blend of Chinese and Western charm, especially the Portuguese cultural characteristics, traces of which can be found everywhere in Macao. The influence is profound in various aspects including humanities, architecture, art, and technology.

MPU values the interaction between culture, arts, and the community. The University collaborates with a number of NGOs to conduct research projects on intangible cultural heritage, which involves compiling extensive collections of documents and oral histories related to traditional customs, beliefs, and practices. Our research results have successfully assisted multiple local entities in applying for inclusion in the lists of Macao and national intangible cultural heritage sites.

The University publishes research results in books, documentaries, and various forms of media. In collaboration with local media outlets, a series of short videos called “Macao Memories” are produced. These videos are broadcast on YouTube every week, introducing Macao’s historical and cultural stories in an interesting and easy-to-understand approach. This raises the public’s awareness of Macao's history and is just one example of how we disseminate academic knowledge to the general public.

INNOVATE TO CULTIVATE OUR FUTURE

With over a hundred years of experience in teaching and research in Chinese-Portuguese translation, MPU has one of the strongest teams of Chinese-Portuguese teachers and translators in Asia. We actively develop high-quality learning resources that are available for free, enabling people worldwide to learn Chinese and Portuguese anytime and anywhere. In addition, our Portuguese-language textbook Global Portuguese, co-edited with the University of Lisbon in Portugal, is one of the most widely used teaching materials for Portuguese language learning in China.

The University has developed mobile apps such as “Diz lá!” and “Chinese-Portuguese News Learning App” for learners of the two languages. These apps are available for free download worldwide, facilitating learning opportunities in Portuguese-speaking countries and Chinese-speaking countries, and promoting lifelong learning globally. MPU will continue to commit to promoting and achieving the sustainable development goals, fulfilling social responsibilities with solid academic strength.
