HONORARY DOCTORATE CONFERRED ON RENOWNED SCIENTIST CHEN GUOLIANG

Macao Polytechnic University conferred an honorary doctorate on the distinguished scientist Professor Chen Guoliang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements and significant contributions to society and educational development. The conferment is held on 31 May 2023 during the graduation ceremony of the 2022/2023 academic year.

On behalf of the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR and the Chancellor of the University, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Ao Ieong U presented the honorary degree to Professor Chen. Rector Im Sio Kei lauded Professor Chen as a national-level authority in parallel algorithms and high-performance computing who holds a prominent position in academic and educational spheres both domestically and internationally. He expressed his aspiration for MPU to collaborate closely with Professor Chen in future scientific research endeavours, strengthening cooperation and exchanges in areas like innovation and technology. The goal is to diligently foster professionals skilled in scientific and technological innovation.

Professor Chen Guoliang holds a distinguished position as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a professor and a doctoral supervisor at the University of Science and Technology of China. He presides as the Director of the National High Performance Computing Centre and is the first recipient of the prestigious national award for outstanding teachers in higher education. He previously served as the Director of the Steering Committee for Foundational Computer Education in Higher Education Institutions under the Ministry of Education. Professor Chen has had significant responsibility for numerous scientific research projects, including the National High-tech R&D Programme of China (863 Programme), the National “Climbing” Programme of China, the National Key Basic Research Programme of China (973 Programme), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He established the first national high-performance computing centre and created a national scientific research and teaching base for parallel algorithms.

Professor Chen has made systematic and innovative contributions to the research fields of parallel algorithms, high-performance computing, and their applications. He has undertaken more than 20 national projects, published over 200 papers, and received notable awards such as the second prize in National Science and Technology Progress, the second prize in National Teaching Achievements, and more than 10 first and second prizes in National and Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards. His work has also led to the development of a significant number of high-end talents engaged in algorithm research.

The graduation ceremony for academic year 2022/2023 was held at MPU Multi-sport Pavilion. More than 800 students from doctoral, master’s, and bachelor's degree programmes graduated this year. On behalf of the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR and the Chancellor of the University, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Ao Ieong U expressed that the government will persist in supporting MPU’s educational vision in excelling scholarship in both teaching and research. This sustained support aims to nurture more exceptional talents for Macao and the country while fostering valuable research outcomes.
