Summary

Objective

To describe and identify the most effective risk factors predicting scale of pressure sore for ICU patients.

Methods

A systematic literature review method was used to totally retrieve the relevant literatures from 1996 to 2010, and the database included Medline, CINAHL, Journals@Ovid, Science Direct and Chinese version of CAJ. Eleven valid research articles were retrieved, 8 in English and 3 in Chinese; analysis, comparison and review the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value as well as the optimal threshold value were analyzed and compared among 4 common risk factors predicting scale of pressure sore for ICU patients.

Results

Braden scale was the most common for risk factors predicting scale of pressure sore for ICU patients, but different thresholds were set; variance analysis results showed no significant difference among four predicting indexes in the four scales. Sensitivity, positive and negative predictive values of Cubbin & Jackson scale were higher than those of the other three scales.

Conclusion

Although the Braden scale was more commonly used at home and abroad, the Cubbin & Jackson scale was specifically developed for the ICU patient, and it has better prediction ability and a fixed threshold. However, it needs to be further verified in Chinese population.
