MPU Clinches Second National Education Achievement Award in Higher Education

The National Education Achievement Award is the premier national accolade in China for education and pedagogic innovations. Established by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and organised by the Ministry of Education, the award undergoes evaluations every four years. Having first received this prestigious award in 2018, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) was honoured again four years later, in recognition of its exemplary achievements in educational innovation. The award ceremony in Macao was held in 2024 and presided over by Ao Ieong U, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, who presented the certificate and award document to the MPU team.

Innovative Model for Talent Development

MPU’s awarding project developed an innovative model to cultivate a solid national understanding among young people in Macao. The team crafting the project included Associate Professor Gan Chunyan, Director of the Teaching and Learning Centre; Dr. Lei Ngan Lin, Vice Rector of MPU; Cheong Weng Lam, Head of the Academic Affairs Department; and Associate Professor Li Yanping from the “One Country Two Systems” Research Centre. Their work earned the second prize in the 2022 National Education Achievement Awards for Higher Education (Undergraduate Level), marking it as the only project from the Hong Kong and Macao regions to independently receive this distinction.

The primary goal of the project is to promote traditional Chinese culture and cultivate a new generation that harbours a deep love for both the country and Macao. The model developed features a creative blend of pedagogical designs that offer comprehensive learning opportunities within the specific context of Macao. It extended the learning experience from curricular learning to extracurricular activities, diversifying the learning resources available to spark the passion for learning and innovation.

The attainment of the Second Prize for National Teaching Achievements recognises MPU’s achievement in quality education and talent development. The objectives include active engagement with current affairs, as well as participation in community and global endeavours. The University and the government jointly nurture informed and engaged young individuals poised to contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of Macao and worldwide.
