Macao Polytechnic University and Shanghai University of Sport (SUS) have signed agreements to train postgraduate students in sports science collaboratively. This collaboration aims to enhance the collaboration between the two universities in education and research focusing on smart sports and health technology. The initiative is set to inject new energy into the health and cultural sports industries in Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
Nurturing Sports Scientists Together to Boost Sports and Health Innovation
The signing ceremony saw MPU Rector Professor Im Sio Kei and SUS President Professor Mao Lijuan representing their universities. Rector Im highlighted the longstanding MPU-SUS partnership in sports education and management, emphasising that the new initiative will enhance talent cultivation, research collaboration, and academic exchange. He noted its alignment with Macao’s role in co-hosting the 15th National Games in 2025 and the global higher education in sports science.
President Mao stressed the collaboration’s focus on smart sports, sports science, and technology, leveraging both universities’ strengths to cultivate sports scientists and professionals. She highlighted its support for the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, fostering sports tourism and health industries. The initiative aims to train globally competitive sports professionals in the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
The two universities will offer a PhD programme in Physical Education and Sports Science as well as an MSc programme in Sports Technology and Innovation, starting in 2025/2026. The PhD programme focuses on areas such as sports health promotion and competitive sports training and science, with a three-year study period that includes research practice at SUS. The MSc programme centres on artificial intelligence and data analysis, combined with sports technology and smart rehabilitation, with a two-year study period. Both programmes implement a dual-supervisor system, allowing students to study in both Macao and Shanghai. Participating students will receive a degree certificate from MPU and a study certificate from SUS upon graduation.
As a national “Double First-Class” university and a top-tier institution in Shanghai, SUS has maintained a strong academic partnership with MPU for many years. The joint effort in talent cultivation will enable both universities to leverage their strengths in sports science and health technology, enhancing research and innovation capabilities in the health sector. This collaboration marks a new phase of cooperation, accelerating the development of sports and health industries while training globally competitive professionals in sports science and health technology.
