Chinese II
This course, as a continuation of Listening and Speaking of Advanced Chinese I, aims to
equip students with a high level of proficiency in listening Chinese and oral expression
through various listening and speaking practices. They are expected to use Chinese to
communicate in an appropriate and diversified way in their social life.
CHIN3109 Chinese Grammar I 2 30 hrs ---
This course teaches modern Chinese grammar (word formation and sentence making) in
a systematic way. Students are expected to understand the basic concepts and theories
of Chinese grammar in a comprehensive way through the instructor's in-class
explanations and adequate practices, and deepen their understanding on Chinese
grammatical structures and their relationships with semantics, logic and rhetoric.
CHIN3110 Chinese Grammar II 2 30 hrs CHIN3109
This course, as a continuation of Chinese Grammar I, teaches modern Chinese grammar
(word formation and sentence making) in a systematic way. Students are expected to
understand the basic concepts and theories of Chinese grammar in a comprehensive
way through the instructor's in-class explanations and adequate practices, and deepen
their understanding on Chinese grammatical structures and their relationships with
semantics, logic and rhetoric so as to further enhance their Chinese communicative
competence.
CHIN3111 Chinese Literature I 3 45 hrs ---
This course includes ancient, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, involving the
main genres of Chinese literature with particular emphasis laid upon modern and
contemporary essays and novels. It focuses on the understanding and esthetic
appreciation of classic literary works during different periods. The overall development
clues and the knowledge about the corresponding styles are taught to enhance the
students' ability in appreciating Chinese literary works. Taking their actual proficiency of
Chinese into consideration, the teacher may also train their linguistic skills based on the
selected literary works.
CHIN3112 Chinese Literature II 3 45 hrs CHIN3111
This course is a continuation of Chinese Literature I. It includes ancient Chinese, modern
and contemporary Chinese literature, involving the main genres of Chinese literature

CHIN3115 Applied Chinese Writing I 2 30 hrs ---
This course teaches non-native speakers of Chinese how to write the most frequently
used and easily understood applied documents, such as notices, announcements, letters
and cv. The basic theories, writing skills and requirements concerned are explained.
Particular emphasis is laid upon cultivating the students' actual writing ability.
