                CHIN3118    Chinese Arts and Talents         2        30 hrs   ---
                            This optional course aims to optimize the system of internal Chinese program and help

                            students get better engaged in teaching Chinese or doing some work related to foreign
                            exchanges.  Chinese  arts  and  talents  to  be  taught  in  this  course  include  traditional
                            Chinese  calligraphy,  Xiqu,  songs,  dancing,  martial  arts  and  paper  cutting.  Through
                            learning and practicing, students are expected to understand traditional Chinese culture
                            in a more comprehensive way, and enhance their humanistic quality so as to lay a good
                            foundation for their teaching Chinese in the future.

                                            Elective Subjects - Group B
                CHIN4111    Language Investigation           2        30 hrs   ---
                            This course requires students to record and sort out the real linguistic materials, collect

                            the social and historical data about an oral or written language, and analyze the data in a
                            comprehensive  way.  The  concrete  tasks  include:  firstly,  describing  and  analyzing  the
                            phonetic,  lexical  and  grammatical  phenomenon,  and  summarizing  the  corresponding
                            rules; secondly, seeking the linguistic norms, norms of diction and the rules for dialect
                            speakers to learn Mandarin so as to provide data or bases for solutions to other linguistic
                            issues;  thirdly,  discussing  the  social  and  cultural  functions  of  a  language  from  a
                            theoretical perspective.
                CHIN4112    Seminars on Language and Culture   2      30 hrs   ---
                            This  course  consists  of  two  parts:  a  professional  instructor's  teaching  and  students'

                            attending academic seminars related to this  program. The topics mainly focus on the
                            relationship between language  and culture. The  course will  help students look at the
                            deep reasons for language changes from a wider cultural perspective, and discuss the
                            linguistic  phenomenon  and  issues  that  interact  with  some  factors  such  as  politics,
                            economy, society, history, mass media and fashion.
                CHIN4113    Theories  and  Applications:  Chinese  2   30 hrs   ---
                            Language Proficiency Test (HSK)

                            HSK is a standardized Chinese proficiency test organized by China Hanban. It tests the
                            ability of non-native speakers of Chinese to communicate in Chinese in their life, study
                            and work. This course explains the design thoughts and theoretical foundations of this
                            test and introduces the standards of different levels and their tested contents. It trains
                            students  in  terms  of  special  linguistic  skills  through  extensive  practices  of  past  test
                            papers and simulated test papers so as to make them comprehensively grasp the skills in
                            participating in HSK.
                HIST4102    History of Cultural Exchange Between  2   30 hrs   ---
                            China and the West
                            This course systematically talks about the history of cultural exchanges between China
                            and  the  foreign  countries  from  Pre-Qin  period  to  the  Ming  and  Qing  Dynasties.  Rich
                            archaeological  data  and  sites  are  adopted  to  demonstrate  the  evolutional  traces  of
                            contact, penetration, exchange and creation of different ancient civilizations and their
                            colorful  connotations.  Students  are  expected  to  deepen  their  understanding  of  the
                            relationship between Chinese culture and other cultures so as to further enhance their
                            intercultural competence.
