                CHIN1117    Modern Chinese Literature         3       45 hrs   ---
                            Comments on Literary Reform written by Hu Shi and published in Issue No. 5, Volume 2
                            of the magazine New Youth in January, 1917 marked the beginning of modern Chinese
                            literature, and the First Congress of Chinese Writers and Artists held in Beijing in July,
                            1949 symbolized the end of modern Chinese literature. This course focuses on "thirty
                            years of modern Chinese literature" and aims to familiarize students with the unique
                            characteristics  of  modern  Chinese  literature,  the  role  it  has  played  to  promote  the
                            exchange between Chinese literature and the world literature, and the excellent writers
                            during this period and their masterpieces.
                CHIN1118    Contemporary Chinese Literature   3       45 hrs   ---
                            Contemporary Chinese literature is the literature developed against the backdrop of the
                            social  and  cultural  reforms  in  contemporary  China.  It  is  a  continuation  and  further
                            development of ancient, early modern and particularly late modern Chinese literature.
                            The First Congress of Chinese Writers and Artists held in Beijing in 1949 symbolized the
                            beginning of contemporary Chinese literature and up to now, it has a history of nearly
                            70 years. This course briefly outlines the evolutional traces, literary trends and schools,
                            and  the  general  situation  of  creation  of  novels,  poetry,  essays  and  modern  drama  in
                            mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao in the past 70 years. Particular emphasis
                            is laid upon the important writers and their classic masterpieces that have contributed
                            to Chinese literature and the world literature.

                            This  course  consists  of  two  parts:  explanations  of  linguistic  theories  and  analyses  of
                            concrete linguistic aspects. With linguistic theories explained, particular emphasis is laid
                            upon analyzing the basic characteristics of the Chinese language from the aspects of
                            pronunciation, character, vocabulary and grammar. Students are expected to enhance
                            their ability of using modern Chinese and strengthen their understanding of linguistic
                            theories.

                            This  course  is  a  continuation  of  Modern  Chinese  I.  It  continues  to  teach  the  basic

                            theories  and  knowledge  about  Chinese  vocabulary  and  modern  Chinese  grammar  to
                            further enhance the students' theoretical level and actual ability to use Chinese. They
                            are  expected  to  enhance  their  ability  of  using  modern  Chinese  and  strengthen  their
                            understanding of linguistic theories through extensive language training.
                EDUC1100    Introduction to Education Studies   3     45 hrs   ---
                            This course mainly teaches various aspects of educational theories, such as connotation,

                            courses, teaching, review, coaching and class management, teacher training, educational
                            administration, and school systems and educational studies. It familiarizes students with
                            the  basic  system  of  educational  theories,  deepens  their  understanding  of  the  basic
                            concepts and principles of educational studies, and strives to increase their interest in
                            educational  theories  and  practices.  This  course  provides  the  students  with  theories
                            needed for their future educational practices.
