ENGL1107 Intermediate English I 3 45 hrs ---
This course aims to enhance students’ skills and competence in using English in general
situations. It will cultivate students’ four basic language skills such as speaking, listening,
reading and writing, with substantial emphasis laid upon developing their oral
communication skills and writing proficiency.
ENGL1108 Intermediate English II 3 45 hrs ENGL1107
This course is a continuation of Intermediate English I, aiming to further enhance
students’ skills and competence in using English in general situations. It will cultivate
students’ four basic language skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with
substantial emphasis laid upon developing their proficiency in reading and writing.
HIST1106 General History of China 3 45 hrs ---
This course consists of ancient Chinese history, early modern Chinese history, late
modern Chinese history and contemporary Chinese history. It focuses on explaining
important historical events and figures, while paying attention to the holistic clues of the
development of Chinese history and looking at the vicissitudes of Chinese history from
the global perspective.
PORT1117 Elementary Portuguese I 4 60 hrs ---
This course introduces the Portuguese language to students from four aspects: listening,
speaking, reading and writing. Particular emphasis is laid upon listening, writing and oral
expressions. The goal of the course is to build a good foundation for the future courses
of the Portuguese language.
PORT1118 Elementary Portuguese II 4 60 hrs PORT1117
This course, as a continuation of Elementary Portuguese I, aims to further enhance
students’ proficiency of the Portuguese language. They are expected to understand
Portuguese texts, use the language correctly and confidently, and know some
Portuguese culture through language learning.
MAND1103 Theories and Applications: Mandarin 3 45 hrs ---
Proficiency Test I*
This course uses Guidelines for Mandarin Chinese Proficiency Test approved and issued
by the Ministry of Education of China and the National Committee of Language as the
textbook. It briefly explains the nature, contents and modes of the Mandarin Chinese
proficiency test, namely the norms and standards of the Chinese language in terms of
phonetic, lexical and grammatical aspects. Students are required to get involved in
extensive practices from five parts: monosyllabic characters and words (10%),
multisyllabic characters and words (20%), contrast between Portuguese and Chinese
(10%), reading aloud of texts (30%) and speaking in Chinese about a given topic (30%).
The students will be systematically trained according to the tested items, such as
pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and reading aloud. As for
the tested item of speaking in Chinese about a given topic, the teacher will train the
students in a comprehensive way from phonetic, lexical and grammatical aspects, and
assess and help them achieve a good performance. This course aims to familiarize the
students with the basic knowledge and the testing techniques to improve their
performances in the Mandarin Chinese Proficiency Test.
