                CHIN3119    Ancient Chinese                   3       45 hrs   ---
                            This  course  consists  of  two  parts:  selected  readings  in  ancient  Chinese  and  basic
                            knowledge about ancient Chinese. For the  first part, emphasis is laid upon explaining
                            the words and sentences in the chosen texts, particularly the frequently used words. For
                            the  second  part,  emphasis  is  laid  upon  explaining  the  theories  of  ancient  Chinese  in
                            terms of characters, vocabulary, grammar, phonology, exegetics and stylistics. Students
                            are instructed to grasp the characteristics and rules of ancient Chinese so as to lay a
                            solid foundation for further study on related courses.
                CHIN3120    Introduction to Chinese Culture   3       45 hrs   ---
                            This course introduces Chinese culture to students in a comprehensive and interesting

                            way.  Students  are  expected  to  know  the  basic  outline,  traces  of  development  and
                            characteristics  of  Chinese  culture.  They  are  required  to  participate  in  various  related
                            discussions individually or as a group and complete a corresponding cultural report so as
                            to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture.
                CHIN3121    Foreign Literature I              3       45 hrs   ---
                            This course mainly introduces to students the world literature from ancient Greek till the

                            twentieth century, particularly the European and American works of dominant types of
                            literature  that  were  of  great  literary  value,  such  as  theology,  epic,  tragedy,  comedy,
                            novel  and  poetry.  With  the  help  of  the  instructor,  the  students  are  expected  to
                            understand  the  spiritual  individualism  and  esthetic  qualities  manifested  in  different
                            times and in works of different writers coming from different parts of the world, and
                            discover the reasons for literary development and its values and importance.
                CHIN3122    Foreign Literature II             3       45 hrs   CHIN3121
                            This course is a continuation of Foreign Literature I. It mainly introduces to students the

                            world literature from ancient Greek till the twentieth century, particularly the European
                            and American works of dominant types of literature that were of great literary value ,
                            such  as  theology,  epic,  tragedy,  comedy,  novel  and  poetry.  With  the  help  of  the
                            instructor,  the  students  are  expected  to  understand  the  spiritual  individualism  and
                            esthetic qualities manifested in different times and in works of different writers coming
                            from different parts of the world, and discover the reasons for literary development and
                            its values and importance.

                CHIN3123    Intercultural Communication       3
                            This  course  aims  to  enhance  students’  cross-cultural  awareness  and  communicative

                            competence.  Central  topics  include  the  basic  concepts  and  features  of  cross-cultural
                            communication,  the  factors  affecting  cross-cultural  communication  (including  both
                            linguistic  and  non-linguistic  factors  such  as  different  social  structures,  beliefs  and
                            values),  the  major  research  methods  and  paradigms  used  in  the  field,  as  well  as  the
                            interactive relationship between intercultural communication competence development
                            and practice of translation and interpretation.
