CHIN2114 Chinese Writing 3 45 hrs ---
Writing is an activity that one uses linguistic signs to express himself and communicate.
As a specialized and required course, it focuses on explaining the basic theories on
writing, the relevant knowledge, skills and requirements. Particular emphasis is laid
upon cultivating students’ writing ability under the guidance of theories. It lays a good
foundation for the students to get engaged in applied writing, further study or academic
research after their graduation.
CHIN2119 Applied Chinese Writing 3 45 hrs ---
Applied documents are used in social life to transfer information, deal with various
affairs and to govern people’s behaviors. They are also an indispensible management
tool in modern society. This is a specialized and required course with strong
comprehensiveness and practicalness. The teaching contents include the basic theories
of applied documents writing, the relevant knowledge, the basic requirements and skills
for writing various applied documents. Emphasis is laid upon cultivating the students’
actual writing ability under the guidance of theories about writing.
CHIN2129 Ancient Chinese Literature I 3 45 hrs ---
This course focuses on the holistic developmental clues of ancient Chinese literature and
the main characteristics of different periods. Many factors, such as the specific historical
backgrounds, life experiences of writers and esthetic thoughts of a certain period, are
taken into consideration to interpret literary works in a comprehensive way. The
instructor will help students understand the representative works of important writers,
their unique styles and thoughts, and appreciate the unique artistic charm and values of
the times. The students are expected to achieve a comprehensive and systematic
understanding of ancient Chinese literature and the representative writers.
CHIN2130 Ancient Chinese Literature II 3 45 hrs CHIN2129
This course is a continuation of Ancient Chinese Literature I. It focuses on the holistic

CHIN2131 Introduction to Linguistics 3 45 hrs ---
This course mainly talks about the basic characteristics and components of human
languages, the reasons of language changes and the basic knowledge about language
use, including the social functions and semiotic system of a language, language contact
and the development of language systems. Students are required to use linguistic
theories to analyze the structures of a language, understand the relationship between
language and society, the evolutional laws of a language and other related linguistic
knowledge.
