                HIST3107    Introduction to European Culture   2      30 hrs   ---
                            This course aims to enable students without a European cultural background to learn

                            something about the people, events and concepts that are familiar to those who have
                            been  educated  within  the  European  cultural  tradition.  It  aims  to  add  the  necessary
                            cultural vocabulary to assist the students in making sense of what they learn, especially
                            when one is aware that learning a language is only part of understanding a culture. This
                            cultural vocabulary allows a student, as a language learner and a learner of English, to
                            participate in conversations where a certain range of background knowledge is taken for
                            granted.

                PORT3119    Portuguese Extensive Reading I    2       30 hrs   ---
                            This course aims to enlarge students’ vocabulary and improve their reading speed and
                            comprehension.  Various  Portuguese  texts  are  analyzed  to  enhance  their  knowledge
                            about both linguistics and literary style.

                PORT3120    Portuguese Extensive Reading II   2       30 hrs   PORT1119
                            This  course  is  a  continuation  of  Portuguese  Extensive  Reading  I.  It  aims  to  enlarge
                            students’  vocabulary  and  improve  their  reading  speed  and  comprehension.  Various
                            Portuguese texts are analyzed to enhance their knowledge about both linguistics and
                            literary style.

                CANT4100    Studies on Cantonese              2       30 hrs   ---
                            This course is designed for students to understand the present study on Cantonese, such
                            as  noumenon,  application,  teaching,  history,  and  folk  culture.  They  are  expected  to
                            deepen their understanding on this Chinese dialect and the commonly used language in
                            Macao from multi-dimensions through various methods such as observation, collection,
                            discussion and analysis.
                CHIN4114    Appreciation  of  Ci  During  the  Song  2   30 hrs   ---
                            Dynasty

                            This course is designed for students to appreciate and analyze the different schools and
                            excellent  pieces  of  different  styles  of  Ci  during  the  Northern  and  Southern  Song
                            Dynasties.  They  are  expected  to  understand  the  beautiful  and  deep  imagination,  the
                            unique structural characteristics and methods of expression, and realize the differences
                            between the Romantic School and Powerful School so as to cultivate their good esthetic
                            sentiment and appreciation ability for Ci.

                CHIN4116    Translation   and   Comparative  2        30 hrs   ---
                            Literature
                            This course explores the relationship between culture and translation theoretically and
                            practically,  and  introduces  to  students  the  major  differences  between  Chinese  and
                            western cultures and their influences upon the process of translation. The students are
                            required to understand the cultural barriers a translator, as a player in cross-cultural and
                            cross-linguistic activities, has to face, including the differences in emotional expressions,
                            values, esthetic sentiments, idioms, symbols and metaphors between the  source and
                            target cultures. They are instructed to analyze the sample target texts and their own
                            target texts to strengthen their cultural awareness.
