                             To equip students with the basic knowledge of instruments, specimens and related tools

                             in a clinical laboratory and in the management of it. Contents: Clinical analysis instruments,
                             specimens  and  related  tools;  Laboratory  safety;  Reagent  storage  and  equipments
                             maintenance; Staff training; Hazard management; Quality control and substantial quality
                             improvement; Resource management; Laboratory information system (LIS); Management
                             clinical laboratories in various sizes (large, medium and small).
                 BSMB3101  Molecular Biology                   6       90 hrs    ---

                             To  introduce  students  with  the  basic  knowledge  of  molecular  biology,  key  concepts,
                             experimental methods and procedures in current molecular biology laboratory. Contents:
                             Isolation  and  extraction  of  nucleic  acids;  Purification  &  quantitation  of  nucleic  acids;
                             Blotting; molecular cloning; Selection and analysis of recombinant DNA; Polymerase chain
                             reaction; DNA and protein fingerprinting; DNA sequencing; microarrays; Bioinformatics
                             and genetic diagnosis.

                             To enable students to understand the mechanisms and diagnosis of diseases by using
                             molecular biology techniques. Contents: Based on the molecular biology techniques to
                             identify/diagnose parental status, cancer markers or virus; Hybridization, PCR, DNA matrix,
                             cross gene hybridization (CGS), and study of natural reaction against macrophage protein
                             1 (NRAMP1) techniques.

                             To equip students with theories and practices in laboratory analysis technologies of food
                             and water quality in chemical aspects, with emphasis on analytical procedures, quality
                             standards, and result interpretation. Contents: Water sampling methods; Significance of
                             water  quality  to  public  health;  Analytical  methods  for  water  quality;  Drinking  water
                             treatment;  Food  sampling  methods;  Analysis  of  food  additives,  residues  and
                             contaminations, as well as analysis of food nutrition.

                             To  equip  students  with  theories  and  practices  in  laboratory  analysis  technologies  in

                             environmental samples, including food, water and air quality in microbiological aspects,
                             with  emphasis  on  analytical  procedures,  quality  standards,  and  result  interpretation.
                             Contents:  Sampling  methods;  Quantitative  parameters:  total  bacterial  count,  Yeast  &
                             mould count, coliforms, E. coli, Vibrio parahemolyticus, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus
                             aureus, Enterococcus, Pseudomonas and Clostridium perfringens; Qualitative parameters:
                             Salmonella,  Vibrio  cholerae,  Listeria  monocytogenes,  E.  coli  O157,  Shigella,
                             Campylobacter, Clostridium botulinum, Legionella, and foodborne virus and parasites.

                             To  equip  students  with  the  concepts  of  scientific  research,  experimental  design,  data
                             organization,  research  project  implementation,  proposal  and  thesis  writing.  Contents:
                             Research concepts and hypotheses; Literature review; Experiment and research design;
                             Data  organization;  Proposal  writing;  Research  program  implementation;  Data  analysis;
                             Thesis writing; Investigation on critical thinking.
