                             To equip students with a good foundation in chemical knowledge that allows students to

                             make  qualitative  and  quantitative  inquiries  into  topics  in  health  science.  Contents:
                             Introduction;  Stoichiometric  chemistry;  Thermal  chemistry  -  chemical  equilibrium  and
                             chemical  kinetics;  Gas-ideal  gas  and  their  calculations;  Solution  –  concentration  and
                             properties;  Acid,  base  and  salt;  Oxidation,  Reduction  and  Electrochemistry;  Basic
                             structures of material-atom and molecule; Chemistry and life – atmosphere, pollution and
                             its environmental relationships; Water – purification and pollution; Daily chemistry.

                 BSIM1102      Immunology                      3       45 hrs    ---
                             To enable students to understand the fundamental principles of immunology and basic
                             immunological techniques through lectures and practical sessions. Contents: Innate and
                             adaptive immunity in human; Structures and functions of complements and antibodies; T
                             cell  receptor  structure  and  function  of  T  lymphocytes;  Antigen  presentation  to  T
                             lymphocytes  and  B  cells,  cytokines,  auto-immune  diseases,  transplantation  and
                             hypersensitivity.

                 BSMB1102     Microbiology                     4       60 hrs    ---
                             To equip students with the knowledge in microorganisms and their clinical significance,
                             which  enable  students  to  understand  and  manipulate  basic  microorganism  analysis
                             techniques, and  to establish  their aseptic concept. Contents: Definitions,  features and
                             classifications of microbes including bacteria, virus, fungus and parasites; Role of microbes
                             in human’s health and diseases; Host immunity, disinfection and sterilization; Common
                             bacteria, viral, fungal, and parasitic infection; Analytical techniques include microscopy,
                             culture  and  biochemistry  characterization,  aseptic  techniques,  and  microbiology
                             laboratory safety.

                 BSOC1102    Organic Chemistry                 3       45 hrs    ---
                             To equips students with the knowledge in basic structures, properties and reactions of
                             organic  compounds.  Contents:  Introduction;  Properties  and  Structure  of  organic
                             compounds; Classification of organic compounds – hydrocarbons (aliphatic and aromatic
                             compounds) and their derivatives (alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, amine,
                             carboxylic acids and their derivatives-acid anhydrides, amide, ester); Reactions of organic
                             compounds; Organic compound analysis; Organic chemistry and daily life.
                 BSPP1101      Introduction to Pharmacy Profession   1   15 hrs   ---
                             To equip students with an enhanced understanding of pharmacy profession. Contents:

                             Introduction  of  pharmacy  profession;  Current  trend  in  pharmaceutical  science  and
                             pharmacy practice; Role of pharmacy profession in Macao; Current situation of healthcare
                             system in Macao; Professional ethics.
                 BSPP1102      Pathophysiology                 4       60 hrs    ---
                             To equip students with the knowledge in mechanisms and laws about occurrence, process,

                             prognosis of different diseases and to explain the relationships among pathophysiology,
                             biology,  genetics,  anthropotomy,  histology,  physiology,  biochemistry,  biophysics,
                             pathology, pharmacology, immunology, microbiology, and parasitology. Contents: Disease
                             introduction;  Disorders  of  water  and  electrolyte  metabolism;  Acid-base  disturbances;
                             Hypoxia; Fever; Stress; Edema; Shock; Disseminated intravascular coagulation; Ischemia-
                             reperfusion  injury;  Cellular  signal  transduction  and  disease;  Apoptosis  and  diseases;
                             Cardiac insufficiency; Respiratory insufficiency; Hepatic insufficiency; Renal insufficiency.
