BSAC2101 Analytical Chemistry 3 45 hrs ---
To equip students with the knowledge in structures and composition analysis methods
which will be useful for further study in other related subjects. Contents: Introduction;
Area of analytical chemistry; Classification of analytical methods: inorganic analysis –
cations and anions identifications, quantitative analysis: gravimetric analysis and
volumetric analysis (acid, base titration, oxidation/reduction titration, precipitate titration,
complex titration); Instrumental analysis – electrochemical analysis, spectroscopic
analysis; Organic analysis.
BSMC2101 Medicinal Chemistry 4 60 hrs BSOC1102
To equip students with the knowledge in methods and technologies employed in drug
design processes, to understand the chemical structures and physiochemical properties of
drugs, and to comprehend the pharmacological principles of drugs and their metabolic
processes. This course will serve as a theoretical basis for studying rational drug design
and usage. Contents: Drug discovery and development; Combinatorial chemistry;
Computer-aided drug design; Chiral drug; Structures anti-microbial agents.
BSPA2102 Pharmaceutical Analysis 4 60 hrs BSAC2101
To equip students with the basic principles and practical experiences of analytical
techniques in identifying and quantifying the active ingredients and impurities of
medicines. The concepts of method validation, stability-indicating analysis, quality control
and structural elucidation are to be covered. Contents: Pharmacopoeia assays and limit
tests; Analytical method validation; Stability-indicating analysis; Practical experiences on
various analytical instrumentations; Principles of common analytical techniques, including
titrimetric and chemical analysis methods, ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy, atomic
spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas
chromatography (GC), high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary
electrophoresis (CE).
BSPG2102 Pharmacognosy 4 60 hrs ---
To equip students with the knowledge and usages of pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical
botany. Contents: The chemical aspects, biogenesis, external characteristics, toxicology
and usages of medicinal plants; Classifications and characteristics of chemical constituents
in pharmacognosy, including glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics, resins, volatile
oils, carbohydrates, lipids, steroids and antibiotic.
BSPP2102 Pharmacy Practice I 3 45 hrs ---
To equip students with theory and practices of pharmacy profession in both community
and hospital sectors. Contents: Roles and functions of community pharmacy and hospital
pharmacy; Practical knowledge and techniques in community and hospital pharmacy
practices; Drug information services.
