                             To equip students with the knowledge in structures and composition analysis methods
                             which will be useful for further study in other related subjects. Contents: Introduction;
                             Area  of  analytical  chemistry;  Classification  of  analytical  methods:  inorganic  analysis  –
                             cations  and  anions  identifications,  quantitative  analysis:  gravimetric  analysis  and
                             volumetric analysis (acid, base titration, oxidation/reduction titration, precipitate titration,
                             complex  titration);  Instrumental  analysis  –  electrochemical  analysis,  spectroscopic
                             analysis; Organic analysis.
                 BSMC2101    Medicinal Chemistry               4       60 hrs    BSOC1102

                             To equip students with the knowledge in methods and technologies employed in  drug
                             design processes, to understand the chemical structures and physiochemical properties of
                             drugs, and to comprehend the pharmacological principles of drugs and their metabolic
                             processes. This course will serve as a theoretical basis for studying rational drug design
                             and  usage.  Contents:  Drug  discovery  and  development;  Combinatorial  chemistry;
                             Computer-aided drug design; Chiral drug; Structures anti-microbial agents.

                 BSPA2102    Pharmaceutical Analysis           4       60 hrs    BSAC2101
                             To  equip  students  with  the  basic  principles  and  practical  experiences  of  analytical
                             techniques  in  identifying  and  quantifying  the  active  ingredients  and  impurities  of
                             medicines. The concepts of method validation, stability-indicating analysis, quality control
                             and structural elucidation are to be covered. Contents: Pharmacopoeia assays and limit
                             tests; Analytical method validation; Stability-indicating analysis; Practical experiences on
                             various analytical instrumentations; Principles of common analytical techniques, including
                             titrimetric and chemical analysis methods, ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy, atomic
                             spectroscopy,  mass  spectrometry,  nuclear  magnetic  resonance  spectroscopy,  gas
                             chromatography  (GC),  high  pressure  liquid  chromatography  (HPLC)  and  capillary
                             electrophoresis (CE).
                 BSPG2102    Pharmacognosy                     4       60 hrs    ---
                             To equip students with the knowledge and usages of pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical

                             botany. Contents: The chemical aspects, biogenesis, external characteristics, toxicology
                             and usages of medicinal plants; Classifications and characteristics of chemical constituents
                             in pharmacognosy, including glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics, resins, volatile
                             oils, carbohydrates, lipids, steroids and antibiotic.
                 BSPP2102    Pharmacy Practice I               3       45 hrs    ---
                             To equip students with theory and practices of pharmacy profession in both community
                             and hospital sectors. Contents: Roles and functions of community pharmacy and hospital
                             pharmacy;  Practical  knowledge  and  techniques  in  community  and  hospital  pharmacy
                             practices; Drug information services.
