Faculty of Arts and Design of MPU Holds a Lecture Exploring Musical Relics of the Silk Road
The Bachelor of Arts in Music programme at the Faculty of Arts and Design (FAD) of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) invited Professor Xia Yanzhou from Zhejiang Conservatory of Music to hold a lecture on “The Influence of Western Regions Music on China from the Musical Relics of the Silk Road.” By analysing music relics along the Silk Road, the lecture aims to explore the impact of Western region music on China. Through this lecture, students and teachers of the music programme gained a deeper understanding of how Western region culture has influenced Chinese music styles, performance techniques, and cultural contexts, thereby enriching their understanding of Chinese music history and cross-cultural exchanges.
The Silk Road was a vital conduit for exchanges between ancient Eastern and Western civilisations and served as a bridge for musical exchanges. Over the centuries, music exchanges between China and the Western regions (modern Central Asia and West Asia) have been diverse and rich, profoundly influencing the development of Chinese music. By examining music relics along the Silk Road such as instruments, musical scores, murals, and documents, insights into the exchanges and amalgamation between different ancient civilisations are revealed. This lecture enabled students and teachers of the music program to delve into the historical narratives of Chinese music development and evolution, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity of Chinese culture.
