The 15th National Games Has Officially Opened! MPU Students and Alumni Serve as Flag Bearer, Oath-Taking Coach Representative, Torchbearer, and the Final Torchbearer to Light the Cauldron
On the evening of 9 November, 2025, the grand opening ceremony of the 15th National Games was held in Guangzhou. Macao Wushu (Routine) athlete, gold medallist of the Women’s Optional Qiangshu (University Division) at the 1st Student (Youth) Games of the People’s Republic of China, and MPU student of Bachelor of Physical Education, Wong Weng Ian, served as the flag bearer of the Macao delegation. Wong Weng Ian held high the regional flag of the Macao SAR and marched into the stadium with the sports delegation, showcasing the spirits of striving forward and pursuit of excellence of Macao youths.
Macao’s first-ever gold medallist at the 15th National Games (in Men’s Karate Team Kata), MPU student of Bachelor of Physical Education, Fong Man Hou, served as a torchbearer in the opening ceremony, relaying the flame at the venue. Macao’s first-ever gold medallist at the Asian Games (in Women’s Changquan), and MPU graduate of Master of Science in Sports and Physical Education, Li Yi, together with Su Bing Tian, the Men’s 100m Asian record holder, and Cheung Ka Long, the Olympic gold medallist of Men’s Foil, were the final torch bearers representing Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, who lit the cauldron in the opening ceremony.
Professor Marcus Im Sio Kei, Rector of MPU, and Kenny Ng San Fan, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sports, attended the opening ceremony with the Macao SAR delegation, witnessing the joyful moment. Im Sio Kei said, “Being present at the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games is inspiring. By witnessing the young athletes from all over the nation and the MPU students showcasing vitality and perseverance on the national stage, this embodied the achievements of MPU in the field of Physical Education and Sports Science. I wish for young students to engage in sports activities, which strengthen their bodies and minds as well as their quality of life, thereby contributing themselves to the development of the nation and Macao.”
