A region of great economic dynamism
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is a metropolitan region of 9 cities in Guangdong Province (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing), and the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, in the Pearl River Great Delta Region.

Diversity and complementarity
Besides the importance of the numbers above, the region brings together cities with different profiles and wide diversity and complementarity.
Regarding maritime and air transport, the region has a highly central position, both in connections and volume of traffic.
A pole of innovation, high technology and advanced services
The region leads China in terms of the level of economic development, including the traditional manufacturing industry, high technology companies and very advanced service sectors in Hong Kong and Macao.
Research and development capacity is highly developed in higher education institutions, laboratories, research institutes and large-scale national scientific projects, in an environment conducive to innovation and transfer of scientific knowledge to the economic fabric.
High degree of internationalisation
The Greater Bay Area is a region with a high degree of internationalisation, with Hong Kong as a financial and business centre, and a hub for global transport, and Macao as a global centre for tourism and leisure, and a platform for Portuguese-speaking countries. Among China's economic region, it has the highest degree of global connections, is an open window for the world, and has a common cultural heritage and a history of global links.
The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area
On 18 February 2019, the Central Government of the People’s Republic of China published “The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area”, guiding the current and long-term future cooperation and development of the Greater Bay Area until 2035.
