                 CHIN3116    Applied Chinese Writing II       2        30 hrs   CHIN3115
                             This course, as a continuation of Applied Chinese Writing I, aims to further enhance the

                             writing  ability  of  non-native  speakers  of  Chinese.  The  contents  include  posters,
                             advertisements, news and reports. The basic theories, writing skills and requirements
                             concerned are explained. Particular emphasis is laid upon cultivating the students' actual
                             writing ability.

                 CHIN4107    Ancient Chinese                  3        45 hrs   ---
                             This  course  consists  of  two  parts:  selected  readings  in  ancient  Chinese  and  basic

                             knowledge of ancient Chinese. For the first part, emphasis is laid upon explaining the
                             words and sentences in the chosen texts, particularly the frequently used words. For the
                             second part, emphasis is laid upon explaining the theories of ancient Chinese in terms of
                             characters,  vocabulary,  grammar,  phonology  and  stylistics.  Students  are  instructed  to
                             grasp the characteristics and rules of ancient Chinese so as to lay a solid foundation for
                             further study on related courses.
                 CHIN4108    Selected  Readings  of  Classic  Chinese  3   45 hrs   ---
                             Works

                             This course aims to help students achieve a better and deeper understanding of Chinese
                             thinking,  culture  and  society.  It  exposes  students  to  classic  Chinese  works  related  to
                             Chinese thinking, culture, religion, philosophy, history, language, literature and arts. Texts
                             for further reading and discussions on inter-textuality are included, subject to students'
                             level of Chinese and actual needs.
                 CHIN4109    Language Fieldwork               2        60 hrs   ---

                             Students  are  required  to  complete  language  fieldwork  of  60  hours  in  Year  4,  such  as
                             secretarial work, translation, teaching and guided tour service, and write a report of not
                             less than 2,000 Chinese words to summarize the fieldwork and demonstrate the learning
                             results.

                 CHIN4110    Thesis                           6        45 hrs   ---
                             Supervisors will explain the academic norms, techniques, requirements, detailed rules,
                             choices of topics and the scope regarding thesis writing. With the help of their supervisors,
                             students are required to write independently a research paper or investigation report of
                             a certain academic value about the Chinese/ Portuguese/ English language, literature and
                             culture in Chinese with not less than 3,000 words.
                 CHIN4123    Communication in Chinese I       3        45 hrs   ---

                             This course emphasizes the principle of practicalness. It aims to further enhance students'
                             comprehensive ability of expression on the basis of Advanced Chinese I and II through
                             extensive practices on reading, writing and oral expression.
