Doctoral Degree Programme in “Cultural Heritage and Anthropology” of MPU opens for application now

In order to promote the construction of a demonstration base for culture in Macao, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) has recently launched a doctoral degree programme in “Cultural Heritage and Anthropology”. The application period starts from now until 15th May, 2024. The programme is designed to cultivate high-level management talents and academic researchers in the field of local cultural heritage and anthropology, contributing to the long-term strategic planning of the Greater Bay Area and Macao.

MPU's 2024 Open Day showcased outstanding teaching and research achievements with enthusiastic response

The “Macao Polytechnic University Open Day 2024” was held on 6 January and has showcased the characteristics of the University’s educational approach, information on degree programmes, achievements in teaching and research, social services, and achievements as a result of international cooperation. This was done through a series of activities such as degree programme seminars, guidance sessions for further studies, thematic exhibitions, campus tours, workshops, experiential sessions as well as exchange sessions with graduates. The Open Day has attracted nearly 3000 participants, including recent high school graduates, elites, students and parents, making a very lively event.

MPU Organises Hospitality and Tourism Education Symposium – Synergetic Effect of Education+Culture Tourism

In order to engender the destination branding of Macau as a world tourism leisure center, to promote Macao as a cultural exchange base in which Chinese culture is the focal point while other cultures co-exist, as well as to activate the synergetic effect induced by the combination of education and cultural tourism, an international symposium entitled, “Hospitality and Tourism Education Symposium: Forward Looking into Hospitality and Tourism Education - Prospects and Challenges” was organized by the Macao Polytechnic University. It was co-organized by the Cultural Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, and supported by the Macao Government Tourism Office and the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education. The symposium took place from November 23 to 24 at the Macao Polytechnic University; scholars and experts from around the world in the fields of sports, leisure, cultural tourism, and education attended the symposium to explore the future development of cultural tourism and tourism education.

MPU Invites Renowned International Tourism Scholar to Share Insights into Wellness Tourism and Its Contribution to Sustainable Development

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Macao Polytechnic University invited Chair Professor Carson Jenkins, an international tourism scholar, to deliver a seminar entitled, “The Concept of Wellness Tourism and its Contribution to Sustainable Development”, in order to share with faculty members and postgraduate students from master’s and Ph.D. programs his many years of research experience in tourism policy planning as well as insights into wellness tourism. Such an intellectual sharing contributes to MPU’s research capital and its international influence in the field of wellness tourism. The seminar was chaired by the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of MPU, Dr. Cora Un In Wong.

MPU welcomes 2,200 new students at the start of the academic year, the Rector sends a message to inherit the spirit of love for the motherland and for Macao

Macao Polytechnic University held the opening ceremony of the 2023/2024 academic year and the first MPU lecture on August 21, to launch a new study journey with 2,200 new students of Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programmes from Macao, the Greater Bay Area, all over the country, as well as Portuguese-speaking countries, and regions overseas. Rector Im Sio Kei expressed his wishes to the freshmen to inherit the spirit of love for the motherland and for Macao, to be the pioneers of the new era, to contribute wisdom and strength to the construction of the country and Macao.

The "Inheritance and Innovation: Forum on Intangible Cultural Heritage" Held by MPU Contributes to the Construction of Cultural Exchange and Cooperation Base

To support the development of Macao's cultural and tourism industry, to deepen the cultural development of the Greater Bay Area, and align with Macao's goal of becoming "a platform for cultural exchange and cooperation by promoting Chinese culture as the mainstream whilst preserving the unique pluralistic cultural heritage of Macao", the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Macao Polytechnic University held the "Inheritance and Innovation: Forum on Intangible Cultural Heritage" on July 6th. The forum aimed to explore the theoretical and practical issues related to the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) protection, inheritance and rejuvenation. The forum included academic presentations delivered by the eminent scholars in the field, in addition to the demonstrations of intangible cultural heritage performed by the living masters, inheritors and safeguarding units. The forum not only showcases the charm of intangible cultural heritage, but also highlights the diversity of Macao's culture. More than 100 experts, scholars, inheritance masters from Beijing, Shandong, Guangdong, and Macao attended the event, together with the faculty members and students of Macao Polytechnic University.

MPU Holds 2023 Graduation Ceremony with Over 800 Graduates Embark on a New Journey

The Macao Polytechnic University Graduation Ceremony for Academic Year 2022/2023 was held at 4:00 pm on May 31st at the university's multi-sport pavilion. The national flag was raised and the national anthem was sung at the graduation ceremony. More than 800 students from doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree programs graduated. At the ceremony, honorary doctoral degrees were awarded to individuals who have made outstanding academic achievements and significant contributions to social and educational development. Ms. Ao Ieong U, representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region and chancellor of University Council, the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, expressed that the SAR government will continue to support the university's commitment to the education policy of "dual emphasis on teaching and research", cultivate more outstanding talents for Macao and the country, and create better scientific research results.

MPU Awards Scholarships to 600 Outstanding Students

The Macao Polytechnic University held the 2023 Scholarship Award Ceremony at the University Auditorium on April 22. Scholarships were awarded to 600 outstanding students to recognise their excellent achievements in different academic and professional fields, and to encourage students to continue to strive for academic excellence and motivation. MPU aims to cultivate young leaders who are creative and competitive with an international perspective to contribute to the country.

MPU 2023 Information Day Showcased Diverse Teaching and Research Achievements and Received Overwhelmingly Positive Reactions

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) successfully held its hybrid 2023 Information Day on 22 April. Through a series of programmes and studies consultation booths, academic research experiences, sharing sessions, thematic exhibitions, and performances by students from Portuguese-speaking countries, it showcased MPU’s characteristics, programme information, as well as the latest research results to the community. Prospective secondary school graduates, secondary school students, their parents and the public were attracted to participate, and the response has been enthusiastic.

MPU held a seminar commemorating the 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the Macao Basic Law

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the "Macao Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China", Macao Polytechnic University held the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Public Management Forum" for two consecutive days starting from March 31st. More than 100 participants, including officials from the Macao SAR government, experts and scholars from the Mainland, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Macao, as well as teachers and students from higher education institutions and other members of the community, attended the event to promote academic exchanges and cooperation in the field of public management in the Greater Bay Area and to create a regional academic exchange platform.

Research of PhD Student of MPU Published in Top International Nursing Journal

The paper “Promoting enteral tube feeding safety and performance in preterm infants: A systematic review”, written by Lin Tian, a PhD student at the Macao Polytechnic University, in collaboration with experts from the United States and mainland China, proposes two clinical measures to effectively enhance the safety and efficacy of tube feeding for preterm infants, and was published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies, which is the top international academic journal in “Nursing”. With a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) of 5.837, the journal ranks first amongst more than 100 leading journals in the field of JCR nursing. It is also the top JCR Q1 journal in the category “Nursing” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and is also indexed by world-renowned databases such as SSCI, SCIE and Scopus.

MPI Held Academic Symposium on the "Macao SAR Government's Policy Address for the Fiscal Year 2022"

The Social, Economic and Public Policy Research Centre of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) held an academic symposium on "Uniting Our Strengths and Creating New Situations—the Macao SAR Government's Policy Address for 2022 Fiscal Year" at MPI at 10:00 a.m. on November 17, 2021, to discuss the Macao SAR Government's general policy objectives of preventing pandemic, stabilizing economic recovery, guaranteeing people's livelihood, promoting diversity, strengthening cooperation, and planning development in 2022. The participants agreed with the Macao SAR Government's precise and pragmatic policies of "six aspects of adherence" and "six aspects of promotion", and held discussions in the aspects of integrating into national development, social and economic issues, public policy, education and culture, etc. and offered suggestions for the Macao SAR Government's management.

MPI’s publication Macao People’s Resistance War Won the Ministry of Education’s 8th Award for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements of Higher Education Institutions (The Humanities and Social Sciences)

In the 8th Award for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements of Higher Education Institutions (The Humanities and Social Sciences) organized by the Ministry of Education (MOE), the book Macao People’s Resistance War published by the Centre of Sino-Western Cultural Studies of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) won in the category of “Popular Reading”. It is the first time for a Macao higher education institute to win in this category of the national award. Among more than 1,500 award-winning achievements nationwide, there are only 20 winners for the “Popular Reading” category, which shows that the research level of MPI has been recognized by academia and national authority.

MPI held online academic conference on ‘Theory and Practice of Reform on Public Administration’

In order to deepen the understanding of the latest theories and practices of public administration reform, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (ESCHS) of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) held an online conference on ‘Theory and Practice of Reform on Public Administration’ on November 27th, 2020. The four topics of the conference were digital government, organizational change, civil service system and cross-sector cooperation. Experts and scholars of well-known institutions of higher education from Chinese mainland, including Peking University, the Party School of the Central Committee of C.P.C. (National Academy of Governance), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Chinese Public Administration Society, Sun Yat-Sen University, South China Normal University, Dalian University of Technology, and well-known scholars from Macao were invited to attend the conference.

MPI teachers of Social Work Programme visited Zhuhai Hengqin and Guangzhou to explore the development in the Greater Bay Area

A group of seven faculty members from the Bachelor of Social Work Degree Programme at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), led by the Director Prof. Lam Fat Iam, and programme coordinator, Mr. Lau Ping Kuen, visited the Greater Bay Area on 18 and 19 November. The delegation visited the Integrated Service Centre of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macao in Hengqin, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC), Guangdong Professional Social Workers Associations and other units to explore the development of community service in the Greater Bay Area, to expand cooperation in the field of social work education, and to promote academic exchanges.

MPI Online Lectures on “Physical and Mental Adjustment during the Pandemic” to Bring Positive Energy

The MPI online lectures on “Physical and Mental Adjustment during the Pandemic” were successfully held on 14 and 18 May. The lectures “Physical and Mental Health Maintenance” and “Intimate Relationships Maintenance” were individually conducted by two assistant coordinators of the MPI Social Work programme, Lee Wai Lun and Lau Ping Kuen. The lectures aim to help Macao citizens to develop positive thinking and attitudes towards the challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and life.

The opening ceremony for students entering the Master of Public Administration (MPA) programme in 2017 was held at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) at 10am on 9th September. The programme is jointly offered by the Chinese Academy of Governance and MPI with the support of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau of the Macao SAR. Guests attending the ceremony included Professor Zhu Guoren, Director of the Department of Graduate Education of the Chinese Academy of Governance; Mr. Liu Dongsong, Deputy Director of the Training Centre of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI and Ms. Lo Kin I, Deputy Director of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau. In their officiating speeches, Professor Zhu, President Lei and Ms. Lo encouraged students to work very hard in their studies and research. They expressed their hopes for students to excel as public administration professionals and contribute their expertise to the Macao SAR.

The Communication University of China and MPI engage in an exchange on the beauty of recitation

More than 30 teachers and students from several universities, including the Communication University of China (CUC), visited the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 22 May for a cultural exchange and academic sharing session. Professor Lu Jingchao, member of the national committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Dean of the School of Presentation Art of CUC, chaired a session entitled ‘The Beauty of Recitation’. Students from CUC also put on a wonderful recitation and clapper talk - tongue twister performance, receiving rounds of applause from a hundred teachers and students who were enchanted by this superb demonstration of prose and sound.

MPI’s Bachelor of Social Work Programme Passed Learning Programme Review by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ)

As a result, HKCAAVQ also concluded that MPI has an established management structure and processes, and also has a quality assurance system to manage and continuously review the operation of the BSW programme. Supported by adequate financial and physical resources, the Programme has clear objectives and learning outcomes, which are aligned with the admission requirements and the approaches used for teaching and learning, and student assessment. It was demonstrated that the BSW programme is comparable to a Bachelor’s degree programme pitched at the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF) Level 5.

“Master of Government Management” to be Offered at MPI

To foster higher education cooperation between Taiwan and Macao the Chinese Culture University (CCU) will offer its “Master of Government Management” in Macao, in collaboration with Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI). The programme press conference was held recently in MPI. Through offering this programme CCU and MPI will provide MPI and Macao students opportunities for further study,and to cultivate their public administration talents, enable more mobility of talent, and further contribute to the social and economic development of Macao.

Social Welfare Bureau Scholarship to Support Outstanding Students
Nurturing High-Quality Social Work Professionals for the Community

The Social Welfare Bureau (SWB) and Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) signed a scholarship agreement on 1 July 2015. The signing ceremony was presided over by Mr Iong Kong Io, SWB Director, and Professor Lei Heong Iok, MPI President. According to the agreement, SWB will provide scholarships to four outstanding students from MPI’s Social Work programme on an annual basis. The goals are the encouragement of hard work among students, the training of more high-quality local Social Work professionals and the enhancement of the overall professional quality and academic capacity of Macao’s social services personnel.
