Overview

This annual report highlights our progress and achievements made in the 2023/2024 academic year towards individual sustainability goals, along with our sustainability initiatives taken, in the four stated domains.

In 2023/2024, MPU has continued to integrate artificial intelligence across various disciplines, fostering the development of interdisciplinary solutions to address sustainability challenges. In alignment with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals, we actively encourage our faculty to align their work with these global priorities. AI technologies are being leveraged to enhance healthcare, medical advancements, and drug discovery (SDG 3), improve machine translation systems for communication and economic growth (SDG 8), and develop environmental protection innovations (SDG 9, SDG 13). Notably, MPU’s Canarin project has been shortlisted as one of the top eight finalists for the “Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Leadership” category in the Times Higher Education Awards Asia 2024. These initiatives not only advanced technological solutions but also nurtured students’ problem-solving skills and mindsets in addressing environmental issues (SDG 4).

We understand that education and partnerships are critical in driving progress toward sustainability goals. In 2023/2024, we joined the Sustainability Network of Higher Education Institutions in Portuguese-speaking Countries, a significant network dedicated to promoting sustainability in higher education across Portuguese-speaking countries and regions, in support of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. We continued to be an institutional member of the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) of the United Nations, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN) and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies of Higher Education (INQAAHE) (SDG 17).

At Macao Polytechnic University, we are deeply aware of our responsibility to promote environmental, social, and economic sustainability. This report reflects our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement in these areas. We hope it offers meaningful insights into our sustainability strategies and achievements. We warmly welcome your feedback and suggestions as we strive to enhance our efforts. Together, let us work towards building a more sustainable and equitable future.
